Good Morning Herb,
The red one looks really great ! I'm thinking of doing one as a glider and installing
a tow release and also a single wheel, wing tip skids like in the picture, maybe look at
doing the control surfaces like the real one and one more important thing, the washout.
Well, we'll see where it goes from here. Oh! and of course Calligraphics.

I was thinking the same, but making it a sloper.

Greg,
I'm sure the 163 would make a great slope ship and not one
you would see often. Do you fly scale sailplanes? if so do you go down
to Visalia for the aero tow events and the monthly aero tows?

I got bit by scale sailplanes at Los Banos Aerotow two years ago and went again this year. I now have a small Fauvel and 2.74m Fox which I have added to my slope colleciton. I agree the Komet would make an interesting subject!

Wow ! Allen that's excellent and the Callie graphics really set it off.
Guess I'll have to do a red one. One of my sailplane friends said why not tow it up
off the grass and then fly it around on electric power, sounds like an adventure and
could be done without much of a problem.
Great job! Don

Allen, stunning !

Can you tell us what urethane red was used (paint brand), I understand you had it match the Ultracote. So you really mean they custom mixed the paint?

Good luck with the maiden, you should not have any visibility problems

Yes, very possible, if you noticed the full scale glider replica goes up that
way, you could go with a lightweight power system with folding prop just to
climb and find thermals, the glider also has a single centerline wheel.

Yes is a custom match to a sample of the covering, the paint is Nason
paints/ful-thane/2k urethane, this paint must be mixed with compatible
hardener and reducer(I had both from previous project), it a cheaper
line of paints by Dupont(yeah right ), cost $36 for a pint ,
reds are usually more expensive thou, only used aprox. 6oz out of can.
After all the sanding, etc, it was sprayed a very light coat of pale grey
primer (Nason 1k/spray can) for even base, then the painter sprayed a
flash coat and very light coat of red, wet sanded, followed by a final coat
of red, no clear coat.
This is a lot of work, but is one step topcoat, wich is lighter IMO.
Did a little more testing on power system in warmer weather today,
it's going to be FAST!!!

Down to One Komet , Red komet went down , shorthly
after takeoff it became uncontrollable, rocking wings violently at aprox
30 deg. climb, 75-100 ft up, I applied full power to gain altitude and saw
the prop come off , at that point plane stalled, I tried leveling
before impact but it hit hard, of course it hit in a section of farmers field
that was bare dirt, not grass to soften blow, significant structural
damage, wings buckled, cracks on fuselage.

I believe it was in a stall due to the wings rocking, but the lost of prop
sealed is faith!!, when I arrived at crash noticed prop collet gone!!.
I used the same collet on my other Komet with no problems.

Well I don't cry much over spilled milk, life is to short, I just seen
Texas R/C has then back in stock, I wonder if they have a red one
like it was rumored??.

Thanks, Allen

Ouch sorry to see that

I wonder why it became uncontrollable ... maybe not enough reflex ?

Hi ZRX212,

Oh man..... Sorry to see that....

That was a beautiful Komet. Unique and very well done.

Hope we'll see another red one down the line somewhere.

Allen,
Sorry to see that happen with all the great job you did.
I'm sure we'll see another from you. I've not noticed any bad habits with mine
and I've flown it quite slow but, that was up high. I tend to agree with Herb on the reflex.
I've heard from others that the Komet takes a bit of room to recover once they do stall.

Well yes you will, I just got of the phone with Texas R/C planes, he was
very helpfull, I asked for details for the red version as they don't have any
pics on their site, he went and opened a new kit to look, he said " Very
bright red and descibed the markings, etc. ", 2 minutes later the order
was placed .

Yes I'm weak , Allen

Yes they do, I tried some high altitude stalls with my 1st Komet, very
violent inverted snap, took some 100 ft to recover, but it must be very
slow to stall, It doesn't like high banking turns when slow either, same
results. Allen
