Scat Cat Q-500 Conversion!
Hey guys, I have been fortunate enough to get my hands on an origional Flite-Line Scat Cat. the box was unopened and when I opened the box I was transported back to the early 80's when I built and flew several of these birds for our local club races. Back then we flew a .25 bracket and a .40 bracket and I had a blast flying this great little airplane with an HB .25 and several with OS-FSR .25's and .40 size engines. The problem I have is that my only club field these days in northern VA will only allow 94DB's and I am not sure that a hot .25 or even a .40 will allow me to get under the noise restriction with a 9x7 prop. So I am thinking that I should convert it to electric power.
I was thinking that a eflite power 32 or the Turnigy G32 would be an acceptable power plant on 4C Lipo's. should give good performance and meet the noise restrictions. Anyone ever done an electric conversion on a scat cat or other Q-500 racers? what motor did you use and what lessons should I learn before making my selections for power and setup?
Also, are scorpion motors any good? What is the highest quality of the Chinese motors? Turnigy, HK, scorpion etc..
Or should I just stick with Rimfire, E-flite, AXI, and pay the full $100 price tag?

As long as you can fit a 10" prop, a G32 would give good sport performance. If limited to 9" it might be a bit anaemic.
A G-32 on 4 cells would not come very close to Q500 speed expectations, mainly because its 770 Kv is too low to get the sort of thrust you'd need from 9 or 10" props, and the pitch speed would also be on the low side. For example a 9x9 would turn less than 11000 rpm. Theoretical no load rpm at 14.8V is only 11400rpm. I gather race .40 engines turn over 20000rpm.
As a comparison, EF-1 motors racing on 4S with 8x8 props are Kv1200-1250, for around 14-15k rpm and about 100mph.
6 cells on a G-32 would keep a 9x7 below 16k rpm, and be well within the current limit for the motor - would that be too noisy?

a quick update on the build, I ordered the Turnigy D3542/5 1250KV Brushless Outrunner Motor
here are the specs:
Battery: 2~4 Cell /7.4~14.8V
Max current: 46A
No load current: 3A
Max power: 665W
Internal resistance: 0.021 ohm
Weight: 130g (including connectors)
Diameter of shaft: 5mm
Prop size: 7.4V/11x7 14.8V/9x6
Max thrust: 1350g
the 4s lipos are Zippy Flight Max 2800 and 2200 mAH, with the Turnigy 70AMP Pro brushless SC. the battery's fit in the front space behind the firewall of the plane with no room to spare on length. so it's as much battery as I will dare on this build. I am not trying to keep up with the serious Q-500 guys, I just loved this model as a kid, and thought it would be a neat project to try and build it with electric. I have decided to make the ailerons a tad bigger (from 1" to 1.5") make the wing look good! I always thought the wings on the Q-500 plane were too thick and not wide enough, should give good roll rates and make the plane a better performer for general sport flying. I also converted the hatch cover on the front to use rare earth magnets to hold it on and left a little gap in the front to aid cooling the battery. now i just have figure out a way to cool the ESC in the fuse. might have to build some air scoops on the sides :-)
all in all the plane is almost ready for covering and final assembly. I will post pics when I get close.

I have a Flite-Line Skooter II that I converted. I first used a Turnigy 3542-1100 and a 10 X 5 APC prop. Magnets in the motor let go pretty quickly. I swapped that out for a Turnigy 3542-900 and dropped to a 9 X 6 APC and run it on 4 cells. Outstanding performance!
