The discus launch vid was posted fairly early in this thread.
Main problem is securing the wing so it doesn't pull off the fuse as you spin around.
Maybe I'll try it before I retire my first X8.

So this is what Im thinking of making - NOT copying, but a similar idea - Given my field is smooth. Before I start, has anyone got first hand experience please ?

I used a dolly for launching an edf model....the SAPAC JAS 39 that I stuffed a 90mm into and a pusher version of an ME163.

I ended up having to bind a second RX to the dolly (which was Tricycle gear layout) so I could steer it as the model kept wanting to weather vein into the wind.....which wasn't stright down the runway. I also added a loose fitting mast which fitted into hole at the front of the fuse to stop the model lifting off the dolly prematurely.

Thats sounds very cool but a bit to complex for what I was intending. Clearly it was needed so food for thought indeed. Thanks Jay

this is my cart

a dolly (or cart) for my x8 take-off
on-board the dolly, there is a rx binded on same radio, with a servo on ch.4, rudder, unused on x8
so, I can line-up during taxing and take-off
of course, sound is from another plane.... ;-)

Aussie Pete tried something similar with limited success. He tried it with his Queen Bee wing which is somewhat bigger than the X8. Scroll down till you find the appropriate pix

I saw that video and that was not what I had in mind. It was more of "vertical toss". As I recall the prop went by his nose.... What I'm thinking of is a modified launch similar to that used by the discus launch glider guys. I've launched many deltas this way but never anything as big and heavy as the X8.

I've thought about this but for those that attach the wing with tape, I don't think it will be an issue. Even a small amount of tape applied to a clean wing surface requires a huge amount of force to break lose when pulling sideways. If the wing is taped on all around the complete wing joint, I don't believe it will come off......

Bill
If it went anywhere near his head it is a different video - there is a "discus" style toss out there somewhere. I went back through this thread and cannot find it. The pilot starts with one wing tip on the ground and the other in his left hand , applies full throttle and then spins half a turn. The plane goes to a horizontal attitude during the spin, and he releases the wing.
The one I saw was on a very small mountain-top ridge near the sea.The video showed the launch from a tripod mounted camera and switched to an FPV perspective after launch.
As I said, it seemed like a REALLY light build. It was one of the videos that convinced me to get an X8, so it had to be posted before May.

This is not the video, but it shows a similar launch technique:
Rc flying wing launch (0 min 18 sec)

The X8 launch actually started with the wingtip on the ground.

And that's about 1km from my home
I would say that this is discus launching (Random pick) and it would be interesting to see how many pieces of the X8 will actually fly
Fling DL Discus Launch Glider (1 min 43 sec)

Yes, but it's not an X8. It's a proven method of launching *some* wings.
The question is how reliable it is for a loaded up X8.

Heres a few too many shots of my new X8. I have yet to maiden her. I am using 10,000/3s and 2200/3s for video. 1100Kv motor. 12x6 folder prop. Also note the cooling fan for 1000/2.4 Vtx. Works really well. Keeps the Vtx to ambient.
Also using fine tuned Vtx aerial from Flytron, at 2450Mhz, which is the sweet spot for my 18Dbi patch.
RVOSD and DragonLink. ASI pitot tube at front.
Still to fit the HK airbrakes.
