Is that a UFO on mark 0:57?

News heli was orbiting around the area in the first part of the video. I didn't
spot anything interesting on the highway for em, so assume they were watching me.

It was so brutally slow to overlay the OSD info that way, that I missed the hard cuts,
so the video feels a little raw. Oh, and keep in mind that my X8 is a bit battered
and has flight camera, video Tx and antenna all outside the fuse so should be able
to make an X8 more efficient than this. My guess is with a clean one, cruise level
at maybe 6.5A (3S pack).

Can hear the heli before launch and see it in the distance 5 or 6 times in the first 5 mins.
They orbited the area several times.

I have no doubt posting this will cause more debate than it's worth, but below is spreadsheet calculator I put together a while back and that I use. Once you've done a few test flights to plug in the initial figures, it can pretty accurately predict what the maximum range your plane will do at a given powered speed, with a given battery capacity.

Anyway, the default values plugged in are ones I've garnered from Ian's last flight video.

Play with the battery capacity (C:13) and Flight Speed (E:14) cells and see how these affect the 'Current', 'Flight Duration' and 'Max Range' cells

Something doesn't seem to add up. You have C12 current (stall speed) listed as 1.7A/h.
That's not possible. If I set it to anything realistic (7-8A) then the range drops to nothing.
BTW, amp/h is not a unit we ever use. A is instantaneous current. A*h is unit of capacity.

If you look at the instantaneous mWh/km value in the OSD, can use it to calculate expected range
(which it does on the fly as well, based on the pre-set battery capacity, which was 4000mAh for this flight,
even though I was using a 5000mAh battery).
It's affected by wind and current battery voltage, but I think at 35mph with my plane (not as slippery as it could be) it is
conservatively somewhere around 1600-1800mWh/km.
A 3S 5000Ah battery contains roughly 55500mW*h of power (depends on what you choose for nominal voltage).
Therefore 55500mW / 1800mWh/km = 30.8_km or about 19 miles. At 1600mWh/km it'd be about 21 miles.
Probably eek out a few more miles at min sink airspeed.

Yup, valid point on units of current - changed.

The spreadsheet was something I compiled a while back for a big-winged Easy Star I had; a plane I could fly and work out some of the real data for. In the case of the X8, I don't have one to fly yet, but based on the calculated stall speed (17.7 mph) I simply back-calculated the stall speed current from some of the data in your video e.g. 10A @ 30 MPH (or whatever it was)

Anyway, based on your video, if you just leave the stall speed as 1.7A (be this right or wrong) all the other calculations should follow suit and be pretty accurate for your X8 - enabling the effect of changing flight-speed and battery capacity to be seen on current draw and flight range.

Fantastic! 4S, or 3S with a large prop? What size prop were you using?
