KK control board aeroplane

I have been researching the use of muli-copter arduino base open source board for the purpose of airplane stab for AP/AV/FPV. I decided to include the KK control and so far it looks like very good cheep replacement for 3 standard gyros.

This test was complete to proof operation evaluation of the system operation. I was not able to use the standard layout of board because the dimension would not fit in the fuselage. So to I position the board with the direction arrow pointed up, this position the yaw gyro in the pitch axis orientation. The rest of the axis are connected as orientated to proper operation.

My test flight today shows very nice operation of this board. I only chose the typhoon to proof that you could take very responsive, non stable aircraft and it could be made to fly better than the most stable trainer.

Thanks for interest, any question or discussion welcome.

The Standard configuration is not the best for fix wing operation due to the dimension and orientation of gyros.

I mounted the board vertical arrow straight up this resulted in the need to swap channels to maintain proper gyro orientation.

Here's the flying wing setup with rudder optional.

The throttle channel must be connected to the both KK board and the ESC, I suggest a Y cable.
Arming is done by keep throttle at idle and Rudder over hard or in my modified configuration elevator down. If the board does not arm reduce throttle trim till arming can be achieved.

Where I got my board:

I've seen them little cheaper, but make sure you get the USB loader too. Later you can buy them seperatly but don't buy the HK ones with only 4 output ports.

How to revers gyro?

Here's the final fitted project. Still some small adjustment to dial her in but the systems are working fine. We now using the OpenAero SW 1.4, this is much nicer than the 2.0 KK aeroplane SW because there is no arming required and the servos have much less jitter. Later the OpenAero will support the vertical mounted board so the standard configuration will work fine and the gyros swapped around will not be required.

Re:

Wow!
How did you manage to get this board working?
I've looked in to this, but I couldn't get the board to arm..

Can you tell us more about how you accomplished this?

Like you sad; really nice replacement for 3 gyro's.
Space wise but also cost wise!

Thanks

Justed added more detail including arming proceedures, I will add new detail to page 1 and 2 when I get time.

Here’s a video with the KK control on my HK EPP FPV airplane, wind were very rough and gusty this day so a good test for stability test.

Standard Aeroplane OpenAero KK control HK EPP FPV test flight was successful. Wind was low sky’s were foggy, the OpenAero sw performed excellent, we perform two test fwd and aft C of G operation.

Does the board run the servos at 50hrz or higher?

I'd be careful about running analog servos higher than that. The refresh rate has a tendency to kill servos. FMkit made a stabilizer for a wing, and it worked great for about 3 flights, then his servos died because he was working them too much to stabilize the wing. Just a heads up

Ya, I've noticed that if I plug any servos (even analog) into the three channels that
normally drive ESCs on the KK board that they buzz something fierce as though
they're being refreshed much faster.

I would have thought someone would have made a regular fixed wing firmware for
the KK board by now.

The code is open source, it shouldn't be that hard to change the refresh rate to even 25hz. Probably has something to do with gain as well I'd imagine.

There is a little buzz here with the servos. I will check the frequency later and report back.

Good question!

Thanks Jerry

if gyro set to HH mode servos not stressed much.
I'm flying with HH gyros for more than a year and don't have any problems with servos. Using digital MG servos only and 5v UBEC.

No problem just add a mixer to output KK with V tail/ ailevon mix. or place the kk board gyros 45 degree to sense both pitch and roll mix the ailevon in the radio. The easiest way stab the flying wing / delta wing just use two rate gyros mounted on the 45 degree connected to each servo and mix the ailevon in the radio.

Here's my gyro stabilized striker setup
