ESM 71" WS Focke-Wulf FW-190 Build and Fly
I'm starting an ESM FW-190 kit build and fly. The kit just arrived and has been inspected and accepted into the build rotation.
My intended set up will be:
Airframe:ESM FW-190 kit
Motor:TACON 110 motor
Controller:70A+ HV ESC
Battery:10S 5500 Gens Ace lipos
Prop:MAS 18x10 (maiden) may drop to 18x8 for more sound.
Additionally I will use:
E-tracts:90-120 sized E-flight e-tracts (already have them, they are fantastic).
My intent is to have this in flying condition to fly formation with a buddy who is finishing a similar sized CMP ME-109. Maiden needs to be before Feb 25th.
As I go on I intend to add:
Scale details including: Wing Cannons, Cockpit, Antenna, scale markings.
Fun features will include: Bomb drop and "smoke" system.
You can see a good preview of the kit here:

Power system placement and other design decisions:
The cowl on this plane is huge. So to ensure I have enough nose weight I am going to build battery bays onto the front of the firewall and cut a hatch in the bottom of the cowling along some very conveniently placed panel lines.
The batteries will load in through the bottom of the cowl and sitting that far forward, I should have plenty of weight forward to avoid adding nose weight for balance.
Hopefully this gives me enough nose weight to add some scale detail on the tail later.
I have a dummy radial from a CMP Corsair hanging around that will likely go in this one as well.
Tonight I should get the aileron and flap servos done.
I'm going to be cutting off the "z" bend in the stock landing struts to use in the E-flight retracts. Fortunately the wire gauge a perfect fit.
I'll snap some pics a little later of the progress.

Some early work shots
I decided to do the landing gear modifications first in case I have to do any landing gear mount changes in the wing to get the retracts to look just right when the are full retracted.
I cut down the struts with a dremel cutting blade then ground a flat spot for the set screws in the e-tracts to "grab" so the gear won't twist on landing.
The wheels are not stock. They are some Dubro's I was using on my Dauntless (RIP). I think they better wheels and, in this case, more scale as well.
The FW-190 had some really thin wheels for the diameter.

Best way to start a build thread like this is to POST PICS OF THE PLANE PARTS!
Can't wait to chase your tail around the sky Darren, you're gonna get REAL GOOD at checking your six!
I might have to build my 109 as an FPV plane so you can see the glint off my camera eye when you check your tail.

Yeah, that's what the link to the Troy Build Model video is for Todd. But I'm sure you are WAAAY too busy working on an Me-109 to be watching a walk around video of my plane.

Who wants to watch George Jenkins saying the exact same thing he says in every video? I'd much rather see Darren doing a show and tell because at least you'll do it with some enthusiasm!
Besides, I'm way too busy getting ready for this weekend's trip to be worrying about the February fly-in.
But don't you worry, there's plenty of time to get my bird ready!

If those are 60-120 size retracts the 5mm wire size might not be stong enough.
I think I would drill them out to take thicker wire. Just my 2 cents.

We electricized ours but has Sierra retracts and a Hacker motor. Much heavier at around 18.1lbs and flying very well on 10S. Totally scale cockpit. Plane built by a friend of ours who tried it with a Saito 170 3 cylinder but had problems at our altitude. Much better flier electrically!! My son says it flies very well. Here's a youtube link:
