Finally got the gear door mechanism sorted out. The door's hinge pin, which is also the opening spring, was made from .009" steel guitar string (thanks for the suggestion Jeff).

The closing mechanism while simple enough, took a lot of fooling around to get the geometry correct. I had hoped to use a simple cable between the doors that closed when the gear leg pulled the cable down. But the half exposed wheels meant that the gear leg is too close to the doors to pull a simple cable enough to close the doors.

The two curved arms are pushed down by the gear leg as it retracts. The arms in turn pull the doors closed.

Sprayed some paint on the fuselage today. Canopy and cabin windows came out pretty good.

I agree, pretty good...along with the rest of your model. No painting here for the next week due to much needed rain.

Finishing up the wing. Instead of cutting the ailerons and flaps separately from the complete wing I did the TE in one piece at a 45 degree angle so it acts like an additional spar. It works for the flaps but I needed to close up the gap on the underside of the wing for the ailerons. I fretted for a while about how to accurately cut the tapered, triangular shaped piece.

Then I realized I could just glue on a rectangular piece of balsa and plane the excess flush with the bottom of the wing.

Ailerons and flaps are built up and sheeted with 1/32" balsa. Still have to seal, fill and install the hinges and control horns.

Got the control surfaces installed on the wings. I sanded and primed the wing to see how well the nacelles blend in and it's OK. Not entirely happy with the cowl shape so I might tweek the mold and pull another set.

I'm super busy with work and will be for the next month or so. I hate to have to slow down when I'm getting close to the end!

Awesome model, Pat, you're doing justice to this rarely modeled subject. A very interesting build with your methods, thanks for the open approach, gives us all more options on our projects.

I'm working hard to maiden before the deadline. To that end, I decided to maiden in the next day or two (calm winds forecast!) and not rush to get the paint done. The wings have a single coat of yellow. The bottom half of the fuse will also get painted yellow when I get fillets and the tail cone done.

Lot's of other stuff to do: tail cone, rudder linkage fairings, cockpit, wing fillets, etc. etc. But it's flyable as is.

Did run into a bit a problem with the gear doors. The springs that hold them open and the stops are not adequate when the motors are running. The doors are flapping around a bit and the closer linkage just isn't working right. I need better solution with positive stops at both ends and no slop. I may just hot glue the doors open for the maiden.

Still have to sort out the CG. Two 3s 1800 mAh batteries will balance it but it'll need some surgery to fit. I may just go with a single 2200 mAh and some nose weight.
