Fun Build V - Martin P5M Marlin

This will be my build thread for Fun-Build V. I will be using GGRN's plans for a Martin P5M-2T Marlin. The colour scheme I am going for is VT-31, the Marlin training unit. The aircraft were painted as they were when they left the Coast Guard, with Navy titles. Unfortunately, photos are few and far between. A colleague of mine is looking for photos from his time with the aircraft, but if anyone else has a picture of a T-Tail Marlin with Coast Guard or Training Command markings, I would be grateful.

being ex navy airwing, I looked around to see if there were any pictures of the requested aircraft in some of the more esoteric websites that I hang out in. NONE of them has the types of photos that you requested. However, I found an email address for the guy that has written THE definitive history of that aircraft.. he is in austin, and maybe if you write him, he may have some pics that will help you that hasn't been published. He sells his 'book' on cd for 15 bucks. If I had to guess, this is the guy to talk to.

So, why is it that this plane reminds me of the comic strip character Pogo?

I have the Ginter book, and a friend is going through his copy of the Barth book. I may just have to make it up as I go

Started to lay out the fuselage crutch. I am going with balsa instead of depron. Instead of 3mm depron, I am making the crutch out of 1/16" strip, and will brace with wider 1/16" stock. Should be light and strong. The formers and keel are going to be 3/32" hard balsa.

Check out the Seawings photo gallery. It may have a shot of the color scheme you are looking for.

On the frequency now, DJ.

Watching your Martin come together will be great fun, and having no personal experience in modeling amphibians, very educational for me. Thanks for taking the time to share on this one.

Me too!

I am using the the build thread from waterplanes as my reference. Much better reference than my attempts.
