Hey Groupies,
I was wondering if we should get an "archive" forum started for the purpose of collecting build manuals/instructions.
There seems to be a Lot of old timey stuff out there that would be fun/interesting to look at.
Or how about the great ole built out sailplane you scored but have no documentation on?
Or maybe you just plane (ha ha) lost the instructions?
I'm thinking a basic alpha index, Mfg. ; Aircraft Name.
There's bound to be some 'sort' of problem with this so let's hear what you have to say.

How about making the thread a sticky? Then anyone could post the build instructions, or/and a link to a build log. And anyone searching for something could easily find it using the search feature.

One question, plans and such are copyrighted, are building instructions also? Is there a possibility of running afoul of copyright laws?

I think I have a few pounds left of instructions on planes equipment and gear. Most the others were lost years ago.
Don't know how much would be of applied value here, but I will take a look, just after I at remember where they might be.

I wouldn't think there would be a real problem with it.

If you look in the antique models forum, there is a thread for plans. A lot of old plans are no longer available from the manufacturers or the original magazines.
An example is the S&E Modeler/QuietFlyer magazines. In the February 2001 issue of S&E Modeler they had an article about a 2 meter glider called the Petrel. Those plans that were available from this publisher are no longer available.
For about four dollars, a plan can be scanned into a pdf file at your local blueprint print shop.

Please do not include any kit plans designed and owned by Sky Bench - Ray Hayes. Respect the woody kit mfg's now while their still in operation and can legally defend their rights.

Attorneys are expensive, yours and mine, but I will have the greatest motivation to spend the bucks.

to late and i see rays point,,back to reality,,,a comprehensive, compolation
of build logs for given bird could be neat. and as manuals/plans are found not to be "owned" by another entity ,post em.

Ray's request is very valid and wise.
I would not copy, transfer, sell or otherwise plans that are still within copyright protection. I personally do have plans copied for personal backup for plans, short kits or full kits that I legally purchased as allowed.

Yet, I do believe the main point of this thread was not for plans, but for building manuals that are very hard or impossible to get regardless.

There is no intention on my part to interfere with the ongoing business operations of anyone.Model airplanes or otherwise.
JC I think already noted my intent...
The collection & archiving of build manuals and instructions which prove to be otherwise unavailable.
I look around my collection of sailplanes & note that very few are 'current' product.
I have also responded to a few requests over this year and each time I am able to help someone along in enjoying,building,restoring an out of production sailplane;whether NIB or previously built, I think yeah baby!
So at this time I would ask everyone to refrain from posting plans-that's just too close to infringement for me to be comfortable with.
And at this time,even plans known to be in the public domain.
Ray,I would like to ask if you have the same feelings re: building instructions,manuals.And please elaborate if you would.

The forum is actually Vintage and Old Timer Designs.

A "safer" route may be keeping a list of basic setup for aircraft, such as CG, throws, building tips, etc. This is normally the stuff that comes up with older airplanes. You know, something along the lines of a digital copy of the old NSP catalog.

It was such a good idea I started on it a while back. I am still working out some kinks, but I have high hopes. Please be patient, its still very much in the early stages.

How would recomend doing these?
I have a scanner with it's software and such sans a PDF creator.
I understand scanning and computers, yet never linked scanned files into one an creating a single PDF.
Additional software would have to be freeware or shareware.

I have an old Epson RX500 all-in-one that has pdf creation in it's scanner software.See if your scanner does also.And don't forget checking for updates.
The Aquila man was just to big for the 3mb posting limit.I searched for 'splitting pdf' and found some online services that worked out.
My first scan of the Aquila was 70 some odd mb!!! Dunno how that happened.

Wouldn't these manuals also fall under intellectual property umbrella like the plans? Or perhaps they are owned by the kit manufacturer as most designers don't write build manuals?

Just found another site http://www.pdfjoin.com/
Here you can join or split pdf files,up to 15mb, w/o charge.Simple to use.
For the latest manual,the Soarus Sports,I made each page it's own pdf.Then I joined which pages I could to reach the RCGroups 3mb limit for pdf uploads.
This resulted in 5 separate pdf files to upload.I would like smaller file sizes but I can't see the point if the manuals are not of good quality.
The scanner software I have will allow me to add each scan as a pdf page.

There will be problems with this if:

Anyone, without your permission, can post to the achieve, this is very obvious. You will be held accountable since it is your achieve.

Posting without control, any proprietary property, will probably include RC Groups as a named entity as well.

The idea is good, but, without your control of what is going to be posted, the idea could become expensive.
For example, do you know if permission has been granted by Bill Warren to post the Aquila and OLY 650 manuals ?

Can you see the underlying attitude from some of the posters to this thread ... "be dammed with ownership rights" ? Without your strict control of postings, you, the poster and RC Groups could become legally involved.

Notice: You or anyone posting do not have permission to post anything belonging to Sky Bench without my written permission.

I know it seems like nothing to get excited about, except what Sky Bench owns has cost Sky Bench in time and money to create and purchase. All worth fighting for to protect company assets. It's is an obligation for any business owner to protect the company assets.

The key will be your control of the postings.
