Bengtson Halberstadt
I am once more priviledged to work a great designer getting his plane out to the public. This time it Kurt Bengtson at Aerodrome RC. The plane is the Halberstadt DII. This is an early WWI fighter that I don't believe has been modeled for RC.
Its centered around a GWS300C/D motor system and will have 4 channels (a,e,r,t). The plane has a 36" ws and is the short kit is all laser cut. The laser cutting is superb and parts fit together very well. You need to buy or cut TE,LE,spar, longeron and stringer stock. The short also includes the parts used to make period wheels including the rubber for the tires. All in all its been a great build so far. I'd probably be completely framed up by now (a bit over a week of evenings, but Iprogress is slowed becsue I'm documenting the build with photos for his instruction manual. This is the first kit I've built from Kurt and if his other kits are like this one, they are great products. As I progress farther along I'll post additional pics if people are interested. Very pretty Dave!
What are your plans for covering & finish? Been a long time since I did a WW-I type. Steve |

Steve,
I'll probably use CoverLite (LiteSpan is another name for it I think) or Silkspan/dope. Haven't decided yet. BTW I goofed with some info, Kurt is just putting out the plans. StevensAero is putting out the lasercut short kit. Dave |

Nice interesting aircrft. I've built a couple of these as rubber powered peanuts. They flew pretty decent even with my limited skills at peanut scale.

I've used Cover-Lite often. Yes, I believe it is the same poly-ester, sold under several brand names. Of course silkspan & dope is still my fav. Feels like a model airplane.
P-nut scale? Loved building Walt Mooney's designs from the center-folds. Enlarged a few also. Steve |

Yeah, Steve,
I've got my collection of Mooney plans in storage. Have thought about getting some out and enlarging. They were good fliers at 12", would be great at 40"! Think I'm going to get Kurt's plans for this D-II, heck maybe even a short kit and see if my #11 blade still cuts balsa. J |

I think once I get the plane done and the photos off to Kurt, he'll put together the instruction maual with the pics and make it available. I'm really not sure what his timeline is. The short kit has been a pleasure to work with, sure beats cutting all those ribs.
More pics soon. Dave |

Wow! That looks good! I also like the whole idea of the DII. Most of the time, we only see the Dr-1 and the D9 (and for some reason, always in Richtofen's dashing red!)

Designing on the edge

I am currently juggling about 14 models and hope to see them in our offerings in the next few months. I can't really tell which ones will appear and in what order.

Gary Sutherlands oiler flies well but be careful of that elevator, it can get away in pitch control if I remember rightly, you have probably seen his models in FSM...
