Don't know about best, I haven't tested them all!
But Model Solutions makes a pretty neat one:

His first application was his own PT model.

Caveat: My personal experience was with his older models, a few of which self destructed...

I have the JJC module. It's good. But JJC is now defunct. I have the Model Solutions sound clips of the PT boat and it is far superior to the JJC system. As far as North American units available, I believe only two exist. Harbor Models unit and Model Solutions. Harbor comes in second place.

Now then, there are European sound module makers that we never seem to hear about. Bernhard of steam boat fame and now electric woodie fame bought a German I believe sound module and it is demonstrated in his video of his woodie model and it really sounds fantastic for a V-8 type sound. So if you can somehow research the EU modules you may find some good PT boat stuff from the other side of the pond.

Hi guys,

Thanks for the responses so far, this is already proving helpful.

Hi Pat, What were some of the issues that you experienced with the older Sound Modules? Do you think that the newer version is better? I am considering Model Solutions but am hesitant if the modules are known to “self destruct”. What are your views?

Hi Tom, That’s a good point I will look further into it to see what I find on the other side of the pond. I did however hear Bernhard’s V8 sound module and was impressed to say the least. The only “thing” that I have with it is the site is in German and even after a partial translation they still left me scratching my head when it came to finding which item #’s I needed. I did not see anything that referred to U.S. PT boats (Packard V12). My wife has a cousin in Germany that she is in touch with therefore I could potentially have her contact them on my behalf with an inquiry. One obstacle I see with this is the back and forth translation to see if they are able to get me what I need. So for now I want to see who is producing the "good stuff" in North America or England before I skip too far across the pond and into some trees.

Hi Mike, Again, the site is in German which doesn’t guarantee me a good translation. I am afraid of ordering the wrong thing because of the language barrier. This will be my first sound effect module so I want to make sure that everything goes smoothly.

Regards,

-Rich.

I have the Model Control Devices unit from Canada for my in progress DUMAS
PT and am very impressed with
bench tests so far. It is very loud. Mine has custom loaded with bofors guns firing, 50 cal
machine guns, diving plane with machine gun strafing and separate starting of each engine- very realistic.
I only wish it came in a nice case- always concerned that static electricity
could fry delicate electronics. All the modules from other manufacturers
have same risk. Treat it like a computer memory board- it is well made. I made a case for mine. You do not ever want static to touch the circuit board.
I had same reservations about few comments posted of people who fried theirs, but Dave convinced me otherwise.
David Harrison the CEO/Engineer offers customer service that is excellent. He promptly answered all my countless questions before purchase.
His website lists reviews from the British Model Boat Magazines.

The complete circuit board is very high grade-not like what you find coming
out of China! (I have no financial ties to company)
Very satisfied customer.
Only complaint is cost- you do get what you pay for.

Can't say for sure... seems like something was frying in the memory chip, which corrupted loaded files and kept new ones from loading... the rest of the unit was probably ok. MSoC confirmed one of them dead and unrepairable, sorry out of warranty nothing we can do.
Happened twice to me, and I had report from another fellow of the same thing.

I suspect static sensitivity... so read up on anti-static practices, like wearing a ground wire whenever you touch the thing. Might be less of a problem in humid areas, where you don't get the Michigan winter indoor lightning effect whenever you shuffle across the carpet...

Harbor Models.

the preview:

Don't know how "realistic" you want it, but from the preview it doesn't sound too bad.

Beier Electronic tell me they are bringing out a new model soon. Expect it to be good, they supply Graupner.

Just to ask the proverbial dumb question, there is a running Elco in Oregon why not get a recording from them and use it?

No dumb questions here, we learn from all of 'em. The PT in Oregon, 658, is a Higgins, but she'll still be powered by three Packard engines. Should be about the same sound produced, eh?

It is waaaaaaaaaay more complicated to make a working sound module than simply recording some engine noises, isn't it? Start up, idle, throttle up and down, engine shutdown, all based on the position of the throttle stick and how long it rests in one spot.
