Printrbot. 500 dollar 3d printer

Has anyone heard of this?

It looks interesting. I know the cost of these things has always kept me from buying one and I will be watching it closely to see if full production and shipping does happen in February.

wonder if its worth paying extra $ to have it fully assembled and calibrated. or what the calibration process entails.

I've got a laser cut mendel 3d printer (http://www.techzonecom.com/detail.php?pr_id=25). I've built a CNC router from scratch and I've also build a laser cutter from open source plans so I'm not exactly a novice builder. However, if I had it to do over again I'd by an assembled 3d printer. The documentation for the version I got isnt very good. This one might be different but I'd check before I bought one.

No idea what the calibration entails for this machine. However it supposedly can be assembled with someone who has no experience in under an hour.

Id love to get one, but for what i want to use it for, the finished printed part just isnt refined enough. I have seen some printers put out a part consistent with a resin cast part, but this one im not sure..

I may just have to pick one up come tax return season to try out anyways

This type of 3d printer is more like a CNC controlled hot glue gun.

That's a good question! I like that it's simple. However, I can't even tell how big the printing area is. Where exactly are the specs for this thing.

ye looks like simply extending the round bar slides and wiring.

my view is the idea is cool, but other then those really nice expensive unit, the quality on most these budget ones sadly enough wouldn't meet my standards for anything serious other then not needing quality. on youtube i stumbled across some nicer high resolution but im sure the price tag follows!

yeah probably not if you want to do some real quality resolution stuff.
It's really hard to tell from the pictures.
I emailed him to see if maybe he could send me a sample or in the future put it up on his site for those interested.

But for the beginner I think it should work fine.
