Historic Art Deco Ferry Kalakala

Does anyone have the latest news on her? Last weekend, she was taking on water, listing badly. The owner was bringing pumps onboard, that's the last I heard. What happened?

I have no idea what happened but do keep us posted when you find out more. From what I remember of her she is a beautiful streamlined ferry from the 30's.

What a perfect project for Mssrs. Allen & Gates! Perhaps even Ballmer could be convinced to cough up a few million when he's not throwing chairs at his staff.

After doing alot of digging I found a few bits n peices. The eco protection groups, both governmental and private sector are turning up the heat on the owner after her taking on water last week. The Coast Guard came aboard and did an inspection. They had concerns about her breaking free from her mooring lines and sink, thereby blocking shipping lanes. The owner was told to secure her better and to remove several buckets of paint.

Also, the owner lost his not for profit status several months ago. Yesterday, he stated that the Kalakala's hull is 'unsalvagible'. He's trying to find a place to store the superstructure while he finds a suitable replacement hull. Guys&gals this is really, really getting ugly...

Hi Guys

I'm preparing for a build of the Kalakala and have been in contact only last week with a volunteer on it - no mention of all this. I will drop him a line later and get back to you.

Regards Norseman

I think that large works of art such as Kalakala are destined to become scale models. So builder's, get a good look and take notes for a noteworthy project. It's a shame that the full sized vessels are so vulnerable because of their need for large sums of money. Unfortunately, when the funds go away so do they.

Keep trying to find a home and $$ for this historic vessel, but economy just isn't forgiving or giving for this prodject. It will be sad the day it goes to where ever it will be for it's final destiny if not salvaged.

Sadly, many vessels that are worthy of saving for posterity are not.

Rich is right regarding the need for a lot of money and attention.

When interest wanes, as does funding, it becomes just a memory---.
