Scratch-built 28" FFF Tiger Moth biplane (first scratch build)

I've been flying RC for about a year and a half and have never attempted a scratch build before but, a couple of weeks ago, I felt the urge building up.

I love my GWS Tiger Moth 400 and really wanted a smaller version so I decided to make it my first attempt at a scratch build.

I grabbed some blue fan-fold foam from Lowe's.

I didn't have any plans, per se, but decided to kinda wing it. I found some color plans for a paper, fold-and-tape plane on the int0rwebs and decided to use it as the basis for my model.

I modified it a bit, blew it up to a 29" wingspan, and had it printed out at OfficeMax. I glued the plans to a sheet of FFF and started cutting.

A quick test assembly.

Laying out the components to get an idea of their placement.

Not sure how best to approach the problem of building in a battery compartment, ESC compartment, motor mount, etc. I decided to build it into the plane in a sort of mono-block (a la the Blu Baby). I designed 3 different shapes and cut out 2 of each of them. When sandwiched together, they form a 3D puzzle with cavities for the motor mount stick, motor, etc. etc.

I decided to hold on the lower wing with rubber bands, so I glued in a couple of basswood sticks to support them.

The fuse glued together with the paper plans removed.

The servo bay. The Rx is actually jammed way back into the tail, hidden by the blue pushrod guides.

I made cabane struts from some coffee stirs and toothpicks.

The wings are sanded into an airfoil shape.

Bamboo skewer wing struts.

Cabanes attached to the fuse.

A piece of balsa wood between the cabanes to add extra support.

Ailerons cut out of lower wing.

The aileron servo pockets are cut all the way through the wing. I super-glued a square of plastic from a container over the bottom of the pocket.

Gluing on the horizontal stab.

Gluing on the vertical stab.

Getting there!

I screwed up the very end of the fuse, making it too bendy, so I added a couple of coffee stirs to protect the foam and to add lateral strength.

Installing the wing struts.

Maiden flight today!

26" scratch built FFF biplane - maiden flight (3 min 57 sec)

Need to install some kind of landing gear and figure out a color/paint/tape scheme.

Very nice. Excellent first scratchbuild. One of my favorite subjects, too.

Great job! I can see the foam addiction has caught you hard! Enjoy this one for a bit while the urge to build regrows!

I'm already thinking about how I should have built it.

I decided some HZ Mini Super Cub landing gear would be just about right (and cheap, to boot.)

I made a LG mount from a thin piece of plywood with a slot cut in it and carved out a little place to glue it to the bottom of the fuse. I cut the slot up into the foam as well.
