Was 25 degrees Celsius when we left home at 9 in the morning. No cloud to be seen anywhere. Windy.

Get towards the alps and it starts pissing down, was forecast for rain early on in the mountains though. Found the track and drove up to find the rain forming to snow further up we got (about 1200m elevation it started. Ridge is at 1800m).

Found the gate to the ski field closed (duh should have known that) and that was about 1km from the Ridge. That is where the vid was taken. Walkable, but not in that weather.

Waited around for 45min, and started to clear a little but knew unless we waited for 2-3 hours, we wouldn't be flying. Didn't fancy that long a wait, just wish I has gone in the afternoon instead.

At least I now know access isn't too bad, and it only takes 1 hour 35min to get to

Ya I need to. Here is a vid on my way home from work of the wind. Video is really disappointing as it doesn't do justice to how strong it is. It is really gusty wind though. Ranging from about 10kts min to 40kts+ gusts

Canterbury Nor Wester (1 min 8 sec)

I'm with Alex. Why would you risk a plane at 350mph + when you can't get a speed! Alex I wish I was there! I'm keen!

I've embarked on a new paint job for the Shockwave. It's going to look bright!

Bingo, you got it. I won't risk anything till April when i head to LA. I can't afford to have to fix or buy a new plane

Well Monday turned out ok. Only had a few hours in the morning to play with as my gunner had to get back and I had to be at work at 3pm.

Was low cloud forming up over the ridge which came and went in very predictable cycles. 20min flyable, 4min of cloud, 2 min of rain, 20min of good, 4min of cloud and so on...

When we arrived i recorded a gust at 45mph, but it was just that, very gusty. Would be 20kts one second then 40kts the next and settling to about 30kts average. Wasn't going to get the nice models out that I want to keep in good nick for the US trip, so just flew the Crash N Burner and did some coaching with Peter France with his new JW. It was still the old heavy JW fuse, tail and elevons with a new wing. Flew great apart from the poor elevon control flex which caused continued flutter problems.

The Crash N Burner was really showing its age and multitude of crashes not really getting up any great speed or ever feeling "On Step". Still managed about 150mph odd. I had built a new nose for it early Monday morning after another crash head on with a rock face the previous week. Also wouldn't have been helping aerodynamics.

Left at just after midday to nice sunny clearing conditions and steadier winds at about 30kts.

A fun day with lots of DS, well for here anyway.

Vid: (Just noticed Vid has a problem and doesn't show the failed launch)

DS 23rd Jan SW wind Wainui (5 min 54 sec)

Wow what a wild spot you guys have. Looks amazing! Perfect 'Burner' conditions, looked like it was carving nicely, it has done some miles. Good to see Peter again(although I couldn't actually see him). I have heard that same 'hard flutter' sound from his JW at Cactus. Thanks for posting.
