Lol....

Isn't that missing the whole point of owning one?

I suppose I could settle for a stock (130mph) setup, but that's just not in my blood. I want a rocket! Mine will most likely be a 10S setup w/ hotter motor...I like the idea of having around 10lbs. thrust at my disposal.

Thanks for your info Pulsar!

By the way....has anyone had success with the aluminum-canned EDF units in the XL? Or are the plastic/composite units the better choice? I can understand where the CG might become and issue; can the batteries be mounted far enough forward to counter the weight of an aluminum job?

Im still putting mine together but I put a 10s RCL fan in it. I will have to see about the CG. Hopefully it wont be too hard to get.

So your EDF housing/motor case is aluminum? Please keep me informed with your project and CG; I'd like to know how it turns out!

Thanks

you can throw a ton of power at.it but the inlets are way oversized and act as huge speed brakes. anything over a 3500~4000w setup and youll end up with a flying brick. its a sport model not a low drag built for top speed kind of model.

My plan is a YEP 120 Amp from HK. And a HET 700-68-1200 in a Jet Fan 90.
12S would be 80ish amps, and 8.5 lbs thrust.
14S is over 11 lbs of thrust at just a bit over 100 amps.
And 13S for some middle ground.
seems like my kind of flexibility in power versus flight time.

Sounds like a sweet setup

I was considering this one:

I plan to run 10S with a CC 120HV.

What servos are you using?

Here's our HET L-39 at 133mph upwind, 144 downwind.
The intakes were too small for the fan, so we opened them up, greatly increasing the acceleration and top speed.
So the Sniper ducts may not be too awful big for the Mach 90mm EDF.
The Mach EDF produces 12.3 lbs static on the bench on 12s with a HET 700-83-1080motor (ICE 120HV ESC)
The 1445kv motor on 10 will provide more rpm. (I haven't tested it) but it would require a ICE 160HV.

efflux RC.... our L-39 at Las Vegas - 10-2011 (6 min 46 sec)

What you dont mention is it does it at 114+Amps and 4900 watts, thats a load of almost 23c constant on a pair of 5000mah 6s packs that weigh over 3.5lb alone. The sniper is designed to be a light sports jet, personally I wouldnt run more than 8s/3000w in mine, 10s on a low Kv motor at a pinch.

If I had to pick a *favorite* setup for this Sniper XL90, it would be my 10s setup @ 3500watts.
HET 9305V2 Fan, HET 700-68-1485kv Motor, and 10s 4200 35c Packs.

Speeds consistently above 135mph (straight/level) and very good vertical (almost unlimited). Flies on rails at this weight, perfect for *pattern* type manuevers, yet still nimble enough to throw some more aggressive stuff at it.
I've considered trying a 9s setup using a slightly higher KV motor to cut weight even further, but flight time would start to get close to the 3:00 mark... simply not enough

I felt the 12s 4200 setup @ 4.5kw was great (easily 150+mph) but I was always conscious not to pull too many G's/over-stress the airframe... took a tiny bit of fun out of it, but it accelerated like a rocket and had unlimited vertical.

My current Sniper is being loaded up with the 1485kv motor for 8s ~2500kw, with the option to switch it up to 9s or 10s if I feel the need for a little extra *kickass*

New paint

Speaking of Snipers, I had to order a new wing after a darn bush jumped up at the end of the runway and grabbed my nose gear retract during a go-around landing, in the mean time I decided to paint my XL, I didn't like the grey too much, so this time it's more of an Aluminum look. The Horizontal stab had never been painted to match the plane and I don't know if Clay felt sorry for me or what, but he offered to repair the Fuselage if I repaired the rest and put it back together and fly it. He said, don't paint it yet, just fly it like that, as you can see either:

1. I didn't listen
2. I got bored
3. Have too much pride to fly it all busted up like that.
