The great wall xieda 9958 reference list of everything we know so far

Any help would be appreciated in compiling a list of reference material for the GW Xieda 9958 Helicopter.

Since the main discussion thread is becoming a bit long and unwieldy for the initiate or modder looking for information on one aspect, problem or other, this thread is meant to be wiki-like in that its presentation and contributions should try to add to or edit this list.

This list is constantly under construction and any information which can be added, corrected, confirmed or completed would again, help a lot.

If you have data to add, mentioning the section number would be really helpful. Example:

(Subject Line) Section 2: GW-9958-001 Main Circuit Board
Then the body of whatever data you have in the post. Put links, comments, tips tricks to making things work..etc. Whatever you think is relevant. Together, we'll try to figure out how to fit all of the information into the various sections. Corrections are a good thing as long as they are accurate.

If you feel a new section is required, mention that in the subject line if you could, to make it easier to pick out. Finally, thanks in advance to all of you 9958 people(and anyone else who cares to contribute) for your help in making this a hot little helicopter to own, mod and fly!

Nose to Tail Length(No Blades): 200mm

Overall Length (Tail Rotor Tip to Main Blade Tip): 232mm

Fuselage Width (at Widest Point): 43mm

Overall Width/
Main Blade Length: 179 mm

Main Blade Speed
(RPMs/full charge/full throttle/100% power): 3180 RPM (laser tach data courtesy of monkeyhanger)

Maximum Lift(grams): ??

Tail Rotor Diameter: 36mm

(Feel free to post any technical specifications you find missing or in error.)

SECTION 6.Trouble Log: Problems seen, studied and solved here:

Unresolved issues:

Issue:
No main motor cutoff on TX signal loss. (Helicopter flies away.)
Description:
Due to the relatively short range of the stock Transmitter, occasionally the 9958 can and does fly out of range of the transmitter signal. This is particularly likely if the batteries in the Tx are low. Once the helicopter is out of range, it no longer responds to commands, and if in positive thrust (high throttle), can fly off..lost for good. Throwing the transmitter high into the air with the throttle in the off position may save your helicopter. A longer range Transmitter masks the issue but doesn't resolve it. (The problem seems solved until the helicopter is out of range of the long range transmitter.) A solder in circuit to shut down main motor power upon Tx signal loss would be ideal.

Resolved Issues:

Issue:
Helicopter drifts while hovering and electronic trims are at maximum.
Description:
After adjusting the electronic trim to its maximum extent, the helicopter still drifts in the trimmed direction.
Resolution:
Manually trim the helicopter using these instructions.

Issue:
Stock charging cable has no built-in protection circuitry.
Description:
The USB charging cable provided with the Xieda 9958 comes with no overcharge protection circuitry, since this circuitry is built into the stock 9958 batteries. However, since the majority of manufacturers DO NOT build protection circuitry into their batteries, connecting any batteries but the stock 9958 batteries WILL result in puffing, battery damage, and more critically, extremely dangerous fire hazards.
Resolution:
Do NOT charge any batteries but the STOCK 9958 batteries if you are using the USB charging cable that comes with the 9958. 9958 stock batteries may be charged in ANY charger that accepts eflite/Ultra Micro connector type batteries. The batteries are universal, the USB charging cable is NOT. For peace of mind, it is recommended that the stock USB cable be tossed or stored away and that a standard charger be used instead.

Thanx for starting this thread.

I would suggest to add a list of online shops which sell the 9958 in every variation available, to assist new users who want to buy it.

Daf, Thanks for taking the first step. This is great stuff. I move that we all Report this post to a Moderator and request this thread to be STICKY. Do I have a 2nd?

GW-9958-015 - Feathering O-Rings
Alternate Part Numbers:

Proven Alternatives(Mod Parts): Solo Pro Canopy Grommets
Credit goes to Daryoon, who showed me how to do this simple mod. Instructions: Buy Grommets for Solo Pro. Use Xacto knife to slightly enlarge the existing canopy holes. Install grommets once and forget about it. Nice, tight fit, and never lose another O-ring ever again!

Thanks guys. I was hoping this would be useful to everybody, now and down the road. Up front there is a lot of legwork to do to fill out these parts lists. Can anyone find some time to get the alternative part numbers from nincoair and any of the other rebrands so i can just cut and paste them in?

Which swashplates have been tried that are drop-in replacements? Which require minor modification, but work?

Are there part numbers available for the 5888 and 9998 remotes? Whgat do we know about that Jamara remote? I know there's a solo pro upper swash mod you did Dary. I also know someone did a shortened mSR flybar mod at one time.

Etc. ETc.

helicopcat: We should probably stick with vendors we know are stable, and will continue to support this model. I'll list links as you guys provide them. If we can take turns checking the links once every few days or so then we can keep the list fresh, and I'll update as you guys provide corrections.

daf

P.S. I have had short term memory issues for a couple of years now, so your posts are imperative to keep me on track.

THanks for starting this.

Many of EQMod's & related MSR mods can be adapted & applied to the 9958.

Charging: Do not use the USB cable that comes with the RTF kit to charge any other battery than the stock lipo! It has no charge control logic, this is built into the stock battery. After market cells usually don't have this, and rely on the charger to monitor the charging progress.

Guys, don't just tell us that you want this thread sticky. Please tell the mods by clicking on the link "Report This Post to a Moderator" in Post #1. You could then select "Sticky this Post", and if you feel inclined, write to the mods why it should be sticky.
