USB Problems

Well, I've got problems for a change.
I'm trying to program my new Naza FC that I've installed on a F550 frame.
To make sure that everything with the Assistant was working, I connected my F450 rig up to the computer and everything was recognized correctly.
I then switched my transmitter model to the new F550, and powered it and then the Naza up.
I got the startup tones and rapid red flashes like a battery warning.
I then plugged the usb in and got a few green flashes and then no lights whatsoever.
The attached screenshot is what came up at the bottom of my screen.

It says:
USB Device Not Recognized
One of the USB devices attached to this computer has
malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it.
For assistance in solving this problem, click this
message.

Anyone know what's going on?

Your connection sequence seems odd (or I am comfused). I do this:
1. Plug USB in
2. Power up TX
3. Power up Naza (& ESC'S)

I don't plug the usb in last, (after the ESC's). Have you always used the above sequence?

For me the order I plug it all never minds. No matter the order I switch everything on or plug the usb in, sooner or later I get the assistant to connect to it, so the order shouldn't affect much
Sometimes the drivers get "stuck", when I get that message I usually switch to a different USB port and works. It may take 5 secs to install the driver on that port if you never plugged it into that one, but it should work

my sequence:
Tx on first
then usb into Naza, start assistant software
power up naza.

Red flashes from the naza happen when there's no radio link..
Green flashes are when the naza is doing its self check before flight

usb in and recognised should give constant green light.

if it doesnt tie in properly, close the assistant and restart it.

You can do it either way. But I would power cycle the Naza and restart Assistant be for you plug it in again. It sounds like the Assistant got confused. You may have to restart your computer before you do the above just to make sure the USB driver is restarted ok.

No Luck!

Okay, here's what I've tried with the new Naza on the F550:
rebooted before each attempt
1. Connect USB/power trans/power Naza = device not recognized (dnr)
2. Power trans/power Naza/connect USB = dnr
1 and 2 done with Assistant on and off also = dnr

As a control, I switched models on the trans.
Then I tried all of the above with my other Naza rig (F450)
ALL variations worked and I got a bright green LED.

A little more help would really be appreciated.

Just my 2 cents... Don't waste a minute with setting in the Tx with models... Even your Tx doesn't have to be on for the laptop to recognize the Naza. It's a matter of hardware (both sides, laptop and VU-Unit) and drivers.
I would start reinstalling the USB drivers.
Steady green LED on the VU means the VU sees the USB connection so I would still say "problem in drivers". Go to Device Manager, delete the usb device, download the latest driver from DJI site, install it and reboot.

If it's a driver problem, wouldn't the F450 also not connect?
I'm connecting both Naza FCs to the same computer with the same driver and Assistant loaded.
One connects and the other doesn't.

ah ok I missed that... So could be a Vu unit, did you try swapping the VU unit from one to the other?

I've got them soldered to the lower plates on the frame like we all advise each other to do to eliminate connector problems
I guess I've got a rebuild ahead of me.

I could be a bad VU or a bad Naza. Have you reconfirmed that the F450 is still being recognized?

Yes it is.
DJI support wants me to try it on another computer.
I've got to set my laptop up with Assistant and drivers to do that.
I'll let you guys know.
FWIW, this sucks!

Ok you can still try it. If the length of the wires allow it, remove both the X3 and LED plugs from the one VU unit and route them to the Naza in the other craft. Place a LiPO in the first craft (the one whose VU you are testing). If it still doesn't work and doing the opposite works, one VU unit seems to be broken

That is pretty good out of the box thinking!
I'll still have to do some dismantling of frames to try it.
It's getting late, and I'm stressed.
Probably try some more over the next few days.

The damn laptop has Vista running on it and the drivers don't want to behave.
Probably won't be able to test with it...

Got to get some sleep because tomorrow's a work day.
I'm almost too tired now to be PO'd.
