New FPV-er needs advice

Hi everybody!
Components for FPV are arrived or on its way to me.
I come up with:
FatShark Dominators + 5.8GHz module
ArduPilotMega 2.5 + GPS + airspeed sensor + Arduino MinimOSD
Immersion VTx 5.8GHz 600mW
SpiroAntennas for VTx and VRx.

GPS located in nose at front of canopy inside fuselage.
APM2.5 located in bottom of fuselage right behind hole in belly.
Wing camera is mounted on canopy in slit.

Question is: where to locate OSD and VTx to get minimum interference?

Has anyone managed to fit a Gopro plus a FPV camera, with the FPV camera on a pan/tilt (not necessarily the GoPro) on a Bixler? I'm trying to figure out a good way to accomplish this without obscuring the vision of either camera.

I have one but have not built it yet. Just pulled from box and checked it out. Very nice design, I think you could cut the Bixler nose to fit this pod. Some other builders have suggested cutting the Bixler nose, shore up the inside with plywood and foam to strengthen the nose. If you did that I am pretty sure this mount would do well. Just mind your CG....

Thanks for the link, it looks pretty nice. Since the pan is direct drive, however, I worry how well the servo would hold up in a high-g maneuver or a crash given the weight of the cameras. That said, modding it to a gear-driven pan probably wouldn't be too difficult.

Hi,
Take a look at the Hitec HS-65MG (metal gear) and the HS-65HB (Karbonite gears)
I have had servo failure on several of the stock Bixler servos and have replace all with these. Use metal on elevator and aileron and karbonite on the rudder. I think the HXT-900 are OK for flaps. They are also just a little smaller that the stock servos and fit into the foam cut-out nicely.
Good Luck

I have no idea about those. Try them and give us a report. They sure are less expensive than the Hitec servos. Good luck..

Here is what I did, not pretty, but one idea.
Mounted it on CG so I can have on or off with no CG changes.
It can be extended higher with the GP extensions.
Also a GP pic from the GP view.

Have the VTX all the way back and using coax for the video.
OSD and other FPV gear in the fuse up front.

I layed sand paper down on top of the fuse and then sanded the block down to fit the contour of the top. Then glassed it on and also made a bolt mount in the air channel to run a long bolt thru to attach the GP bottom mount besides the DS tape. It has to tear a chunk out to come off.

Hi guys.

I have a Bixler and I want to ask you guys about flight times.

When I am flying with FPV equipment I only manage 10 minutes of flight time and
when I fly the bixler LOS I manage only 20 minutes

I have seen allot of people talk about 40 minutes flight time.

Now I want to ask you how long flight time are you getting when flying fpv.

This is my setup

Bixler 1
FPV camera and recorder Gopro hero2
Video Tx Immersion 5.8 ghz 600mw
Radio Rx Frsky
ESC: H-KING 20A Fixed Wing Brushless Speed Controller
Motor: 2620-1900kv Brushless Outrunner
Propeller: TGS Sport 6x4E
Battery: ZIPPY Flightmax 2200mAh 3S1P 20C Gives 10 minute FPV flight time
Battery: Turnigy 1300mAh 3S 20C Lipo Pack Gives 10 minute FPV flight time

Cyclops Storm OSD is in the mail and I think that should give me some idea of how much mah I am draining when I fly with the current sensor.

I usually fly with 35-50% Throttle

Peope who are getting that much flight time are using multiple flight batteries connected in parallel or one BIG battery, 2 2200mah or one 5000mah for example. It also depends on your setup. I'm running a rctimer 2200kv motor with 30a esc with a 7x4 prop, I'm getting upwards around 18-20 min flight time with a single 2200 flight battery. Thats including full Eagle Tree, HD recording camera and FPV gear.

I'm not to familiar with the Cyclops gear, or if it has data recording capabilities. If it does, this will help you out tremendously in figuring out where you mah is going. Whether its a throttle management issue or a power plant issue.

I also found this nifty little calculator to help me play with different power combo's without having to actually buy the components:

Good Luck!
