GoPro mounting

This is my first step into the world of FPV, and I think I'm hooked. Thought I would share my method for GoPro mount, basically the standard plywood mount but with a slight mod to how it attaches to the plane. I didn't like the idea of velcro or rubber bands holding my gopro to the plane so i glued in some small plastic drywall anchors and screw the mount down. It does take an extra minute or two to change the battery out but to me the extra security is worth it.

AND PAY NO MIND TO THAT DENT IN THE WING - STOP SIGN JUMPED UP AND GRABBED ME...

And one snap shot from chasing my Dad's MX2:

hehehe, thanks, it'd be a bit difficult that you send me your wings, they would have to cross the atlanthic back and forth...

I just masked the wing in a random fashion inspired by Eddie Van Halen's guitar artwork and sprayed it yellow, I first wanted to do it red as the mentioned guitar but my red spray was dead so went for something a bit more original. I also masked with tape the FPV capital letters and once the paint dried, I painted the black stripes with permanent maker, also in a random fashion. Then just unmasked everything and painted the underside with grey, leaving three lines white on each wing like a WWII fighter.

I used a comon spray but be careful, those can bend easily the wing or disolve the foam so better use acrylic paints, maybe you'll need to do a base coat.

Hope that answered your question!

Cheers!
Jandro.

Good idea with the drywall screw anchors, but I think you'll find they'll rip right out and send your Gopro airborne the first time you have a hard landing, especially in the nose. I personally prefer velcro. I have had numerous crashes and my camera has always stayed with the plane.

They may get a little wrinkled but they stay in the plane.

Bixler Maiden Voyage(s) - Blundumentary

Posted a week or so ago the results of my unsuccessful maiden voyage - that is - the nose ripped off... so after some toothpicks, GG and tape - the broken jaw was fixed. Finally the weather cooperated and time to try again with help of an experienced pilot. The video has given me several lessons learned. Check out part 1 of 2 (i'm working on the second one - shall be titled Death of Bixler ).

Main lessons learned:
1. Don't launch by hand with ABM (FY31A autobalance) turned on.
2. Don't assume "you didn't use your battery all that much" from a prior flight
3. don't leave vid receiver antenna under a metal awning
4. auto circle mode should be turned off before trying to manually over-ride
5. don't get cocky kid.
6. Don't spend toooo much time doing every mod, if this is your first time with FPV - it's probably best to fly around a bit first - just like the 1000 posts say - use "similar weights" etc... before thinking "it'll be easy with the video"..
7. Expect the inevitable. it's gonna happen.
8. You won't get back the 3:15 seconds, but why not - enjoy!
Bixler FPV RC Maiden Voyage(s) Blundumentary (3 min 15 sec)

Cheers!

I'm keeping a video log of my Skysurfer flights. Mostly raw dumps from the gopro or the 808-#16. Anyone thinking of getting a smooth flying FPV plane, the Skysurfer is definitely the ticket. Thanks to all for the help and insight in these threads!

Nice smooth flight for sure. What motor and prop are you using? looks pretty quick.

Death to Bixler

Hello all,

As mentioned in a previous post - here's Part 2 of my three day "maiden" experience. I'd like to think hot water, glue gun and maybe some extra tape would work... not pretty...

enjoy!

OK, i'm running the same motor and have tried 6x4, 6x5, 7x5 and 8x4 and it doesn't seem that quick. Maybe its the wide angle of the GoPro that makes it look quicker???

I'm very envious of your Skysurfers handling especially at that weight, i cant get my Bixler to fly that smooth anymore. For some reason since i fitted the OSD (and all the extra wiring etc thats required) it just doesn't fly the same.

I think i need to do some CG fine tuning and lateral balancing???
