Question
Where are all the full house wood kits?

I have a member of my club who wants to build wood kits, preferably 3M or larger. However he also wants to build a full house glider that could at least be moderately competitive off the winch.

He is looking at the Genie built up wood kit. Any thougths?

Are there any others? I can't find them.

Any full house short kits available?

Seems virtually all the kits are RES. Not that there is anything wrong with RES, but he wants a full house glider. He has a Bird of Time he built and a Legend he rebuilt.

RES to FH?

Assuming there are no other full house wood kits, how easy is it to modify a RES kit to full house? And how practical, since I presume the airfoil on the RES gliders is designed for RES and not for flaps and ailerons. I don't know much about such things but I read about how this airfoil or that is designed for flaps while the other is not.

So, all you wizards out there, help me to help my buddy.

Any full house wood kits you can recommend?

Any insights around converting a RES kit to full house?

Inquiring minds want to know.

The Genie is the best F3J home build. Modifying a RES wing to full house will not make it fly like a F3J due to the plan form of the wing.

Thanks David. Not really looking to fly F3J, but typical American TD. But I presume that is what you mean.

I see skybench has the Cloud Bound 4 listed with can be built full house.

CLOUD BOUND 4
http://www.skybench.com/index.html?h....com/home.html
•Wingspan: 144" in.
•Wing area: 1278 sq. in.
•Wing loading: 9 oz./sq. in.
•Lee Renaud's Aquila airfoil

Cloud Bound 4, designed by Don Drury and published in RC Modeler May 1977. This is a versatile design that can be flown in Nostalgia events and yet, due to the availability of programmable radios, can give the flyer all the controls possible. It can be set up with flaps, flaperons, flaps and ailerons, and spoilers.

Genie

Take time to look at the ALL wood Smooth Genie Pro. www.vintagesailplaner.com
Laser Cut parts are a great way to on limited funds.
All wood wing can be built to with stand gorilla launches if you must.
It has been built by at least one person into a great flying RES ship as well.
A RES version will be one of my winter builds.

With all the ARF stuff these days, it would be hard to imagine much of a market for a full-house woody. I know there are some dyed-in-the-wool builders out there, but we are getting more and more scarce... There are a few, but not many...

I was asked about the Sky Bench Challenger..........
Firstly, it IS a challenge just to build it. Not for the novice builder or for one who expects to get quickly and move on. That kits needs a full winter to do right.
Secondly...........once you got it done, you may have the best windy day, all wood ship.........EVER!!!
Not that easy to fly........... in the hands of an experienced pilot.........WOW!
I built mine with flaps, use them as flapaerons. (spelling)
I skipped the spoilers, never have wished that I had them.
If you are not up to a ton of work, a look at the Mirage might be a good Idea.
Any of the Ray Hays wood kits are also good.

About the only ARF full house 3M that is in reach of these pilots is the Dragonfly Strong. As I recall Jack you had one and liked it.

Just about all the bagged wing 3M gliders have gone the way of the dodo bird, now that Phil Barnes no longer makes wings.

Northeast Sailplane is pretty much no-more.

Avas are $900 and Supras are $1400.

And, yes the builders are few but they are still out there.

That Smooth Genie Pro kit is looking like the best option at this point, if you want to build a wood, full house TD contest worthy ship.

Hi Ed,

I looked really hard at the Genie when I was looking for a 3M builders plane. I have seen these planes fly in contests, the bagged wing version, and they fly and perform very well. Another nice thing about them is that there is a wood skin over foam wing option that could an option for your builders also. Anker is still cutting foam cores for the Genie LT/S. If you keep the wing hold down patterns the same your builders could migrate to a bagged foam wing option if the spirit ever moved them.

Sky Bench ... Full house

There will be a day next summer when you all will read about the ...

Cross Over

I have a Notification file, send an email with Cross Over in subject line to:

Skybench@comcast.net

Also, watch my on going Newsletter. My web master has material to put up now and more to come. No questions will be answered until after the test fly. I'm hoping to fly the first sanctioned contest with the Cross Over at Toledo's June contest.

Kit features:

Wing span .. approx. 130", Open bay or fully sheeted.

Fuse ... option .. wood or glass pod/boom.

Tail Group ... option .. Full Flying stab or fixed stab/elevator.

I surely miss Bobby.

Sean, I couldn't keep my mouth shut any longer.

I haven't bult an original full house sailplane since 1996. I occasionally thing about a full house version of my RES sailplanes but think better of it after a good night's sleep.
