Build Log
Bob Starr Bumble Bee ---video added---

The Bumble Bee has always been one of my favorite planes, so with the indoor season coming up I started drawing.

To get enough wing, I selected a 9in span (which works out to around 1/8 scale!) Sized for an AR6400 setup. Construction is a combination and 6 and 3mm depron, laminated and sanded to form the cowl and turtle deck. The cowl turned out to be much easier than I had feared, taking about 30 minutes to finish. The canopy was formed by shrinking some 3in clear battery shrink wrap around a wood form.

Once I get this guy in the air I'll post pics of a second build, with detailing/paint.

Yeah, there is some substantial volume in the fuselage. I was very tempted to try and build one full scale out of depron. It would be smaller than the indoor Cri Cri that was at the same german show.

Surprisingly, things this squat tend to be rather tame in roll (sometimes they have a slow but stable oscillation ). The killer is that any time you touch the elevator all your speed goes away. Gentle rudder turns is all I have planned for this little guy.

Got all the controls set up today, hopefully it will stop raining at some point tomorrow.

It flies! It flies! Pretty tame too. Super stable at high alpha, so it was easy to get it trimmed just right over the soft grass. I could pull full up and it would just mush right in.

I installed the 4-site motor and gearbox first, but with the giant cowl, I was only getting about 20g of thrust, on a 50g airplane. Switched over to the park 180 and 2s, bringing the weight up to 60g, but getting close to 1:1 thrust.

Time for some video and paint. If only there weren't a foot of snow in the forecast

It is just too cool. Do you have a plan set for it? I would love to build one.(someday when I have the time).

I've got a backlog of planes I need to post plans for, but I'll get to it. Might use this set as an example of how I go about getting from a 3 view to cut files. I've been considering kitting some of my designs, but it's hard to make the financial case for these little foamies, but in the past I've just cut a few kits for people if they covered the cost of the foam and shipping.

Got a short video in this morning, before the nasty weather set in. Bit windier than I would have liked, but it's proof the little guy flies.

I was surprised at its speed and stability...you would think with such short stubby wings it would be a handfull, quick too. Certainly seems like an indoor candidate, nice work on a cool design

Painted it up this afternoon. Should have used some foresight and painted it before assembly. Masking the stripes with the wings on was a real pain.

Now I just need to make a sticker set, and update my drawings based on the final equipment locations

Seeing is believing Adam. Well done, and not a molecule of helium needed!
