ALES - Altitude Limited Electric Soaring

Don't know how many of you have heard about this, but it sounds very interesting.
ALES stands for Altitude Limited Electric Soaring

It is a MOM, Man on Man, contest for electric-powered sailplanes where a small electronic altitude-sensing switch is installed between the ESC and receiver. At 200 meters or 30 seconds the switch turns the motor off and the rest of the flight is standard TD, Thermal Duration. MOM means that about 5 pilots launch within 10 seconds of each other and fly a 10-minute round, with a landing. The pilots in each group are scored against each other.
This started in Europe a couple of years ago and is becoming very popular.

The most-used electric sailplane for ALES around the country is the Radian! Because it is an inexpensive ready-to-fly solution that performs well. But any electric sailplane of any size can be used.

The fields can be smaller because of no winches. The contest is simpler and easy to run for MOM because of, no winches.
Scoring is done by computer, and the Excel scoring files are readily available.

The altitude limiting switch can be furnished by the club (usually), or individuals. The list price for the most popular switch is $49 plus shipping. Erik Vogel is inquiring about club discounts.

Don Harban (one of the IMSF founders) has started the Yahoo Groups site and Dave Register has started the RC Groups site.

Let me know what you think about trying this next year.

If this actually gets off the ground, I'm pretty sure I'll find a plane to participate with. The MOM element makes it all the more fun!

Erik Vogel is planning on putting out a request for the CAM switch. Good discount if we order 10 as a club. I will make sure it gets posted here as well as on Yahoo Groups.

Any more word on if the local scene is getting traction? Would like to give this a try.

Well, Erik Vogel is coordinating the IMSF club buy of the CAM unit, and has placed an order for about 30 units. So I think we have some "traction".
