It isn't broken, PC screens are getting ever wider screens (can you still get anything that is not "wide screen" any more?), so this alleged improvement is not going to future proof the site. If anything, it will be locked in the past, quite possibly without any benefit to those still running an old system.
Some changes might be beneficial, some might just become part of the furniture, but the fixed width ruins it.

Hrmm...I've noticed that FlyingGiants.com is fixed width. That doesn't bode well for this decision being changed.

I like this and also don't like the fixed width.

I also dont like the beta. The old page looks just fine to me.
What I'd like to see are color theme options. Like a black or dark gray option that is night vision friendly.

Not a fan of the fixed width either. Fonts could use either more line thickness or more contrast.

Alright...

I love the new skin - such as the new-look buttons and refined-color bars and text.
However, the fixed-width setup makes me "claustrophobic", and as others have stated, the current layout enables people with different resolutions to view without issues (generally), although people would be able post large pictures, like this,

no issues with the new setup (unlike what some have stated).

If the fixed-width layout is too looked-into to be reverted, at least make an option so that the user may decide which image to display as the background, like hobbyking.com does.

Fixed width has got to go.

The rest of it looks fine to me and would be even better filling the browser window.

Fixed width really is bad with the large font sizes some of us use for readability. It might be easier for the programmers, but it doesn't cut it on a wide-format display. You'll probably tick off a lot of people who are visually-challenged as well.
