Which one of these greenies will make me most happy on this?

I hope it is this one

SunnySky/EP Buddy X2212-6 (~2030Kv).

as I have two ordered.

These motor would be replacements for the discontinued Turnegy 2826-1900 Kv ones and perhaps be of better quality , efficiency and even a bit more powerful.

Well Charles... I reckon it should do well... can you squeeze an Eagle Tree in there and get us some in-flight amp-draw/RPM data... to see how close static measurements and calculator computations come to reality?

Cheers, Phil

Perhaps Phil if I can remember to add a tach lead to the ESC when I finish building(?) the next one. I really should go ahead and put the air speed unit on this one and see how close the projected / calculated speed is. I know that it is over 60 MPH .

Now running my SunnySky 2820-950 on 4s w/ a 13x6 Xoar electric prop. Ground tests yesterday saw max amps at 56-58, and max watts at 870. After 2-3 min of ground testing, motor was very hot to the touch, and temp readings show 140 degrees F.
These numbers are in line with factory test numbers publishd on the EP Buddy website.

Like C/F above, I've installed this motor into an Extreme Flight 48" 3D airplane.

Has anyone else out there got any experience with this motor and running it close to max capabilities? I haven't been able to find any max amps or max watts data out there anywhere.

That 2820-950 is 140g.... rule of thumb suggests 3W/g... thus max is about 420W... on 4s (let's say 13.5v under load)... that is 31A... 'nuff said!

870W through a 140g motor (6.2W/g) is close to suicide.

I appreciate the reply, but respectfully disagree. completely. Have you ever heard of Motrolfly? (subsonic planes)
I've got their 2820-950 (152g motor) that pulls almost 1000w on 4s... and comes down at 100F. You really outta check out their motors: http://www.subsonicplanes.com/Motrolfly_Motors.html

but seriously, the manufacturer posted test data for this motor at these watts/amps: http://epbuddy.com/index.php?main_pa...roducts_id=188

I have tested a lot of Motrolfly motors and found that they are very good [and the Sunnysky motors I tested were good too]... but the crucial observation in your case is that at 870W your motor got far to hot for comfort... so whatever the posted data sheets suggest (and they don't include running temperature)... your motor is not able to cope with that much power without over-heating... unless you can get plenty of airflow for cooling (and 3D is not conducive to that...in a pylon racer at 100mph you might be okay) you face the real risk of frying your motor.

Those are some valid points about observed temps and cooling.
I'm going to fly the plane today with this setup and will check the temp after landing. Like you said, I need to see what cooling air does.
What temp would you suggest as a "threshold"?

Anything approaching 60C = ~140F is really too hot... but with 3D, you won't be at WOT for extended periods so you might be okay.

I did my flights today to test, and was relatively agressive on the throttle. The hottest I could get the motor was 106 F on landing. So I think this motor can handle the 55a / 875w just fine.
Great motor for the price!

No in-flight loging but 2212-6 with APC E 6 X 5.5 TP Pro Power 45 3S 850.
Static 16,600 RPMs / 22.46 A / 243 watts . Eagle Tree Air Speed V3 67 MPH in level flight.

TP Pro Power 45 3S 1250 / 76 MPH in level flight but I did not take static RPMs / Amps or watts reading.

I now have 36 flights, average time of 4-1/2 min. on this SunnySky/EP Buddy X2212-6 (~2030Kv) and it is doing great.. Stays very cool, screams right along with a APCE6X4 prop most flights.

Thanks for the testing Phil as I would not have found these most likely otherwise .

Hi Charles,

Sometimes static testing turns out to be useful!

Glad it is working out well.

Cheers, Phil

Seems like the kv's can be quite a bit off from the manufacturer's specs on these SunnySky motors.

A while back I bought a SunnySky 2216-10 KV880, and recorded the following data:
GWS 10x6HD
11.9V 16.0A 191W 8600 rpm
11.9V 16.2A 193W 8600 rpm

GWS 9x5HD
11.3V 12.4A 140W 8900 rpm

Can anyone estimate true kv from this minimal data? It seems a bit higher than 880, but how much? Did I get a mislabeled SunnySky 2216 KV1100?
