So just seeing this and love the sound. What is a cheap setup for this from the us? Fan/motor/esc? It will be put in a scratch built. Hk shipping takes too long. Is there a us seller going for cheaper than 30 for the fan?

You can't match anywhere near the HobbyKing: L2855-2300kv, CS10, Zippy 5S 3000mAH 20C battery, combo. $50 all up (add postage of about $15 for EMS/fast). So say $65.....
For 800W to 900W - dependant on aircraft ducting/impedance.
Maybe a bit more (up to 100w more?) if you did use higher C batteries... but they won't be $20!! (more like $35 or so).

You pretty well won't find any other combo for under $100 even. Though if you do cross over $100, you can get more towards 1000W or more.
eg HK $72 for alloy housed 2960-2200kv 6S CS10 rotor, all assembled and balanced ready to use. Will need a 6S 30C at least, if not 40C or more to really extract its abilities.
$20 EMS (shipping)... so say $132 all up for that (incl battery for comparison to the L2855 5S combo)
Or you can make up the same thing, lighter, in plastic housing for $25 less or so.

I don't know if you have issues with EMS speeds there, but I get stuff in 3 days or 4 consistently.

HK SS series 60A/70A ESC... whether in BEC version or OPTO - pref the opto ($14) and buy a separate BEC for $7.... so $21 for the ESC and SBEC
And that can run either of the above mentioned combos.

HK sells the 70 - 80 amp /7s Heli esc for 17usd with 3 amp bec...

Will do 100 amps on 5s easy, slow turbine like spool up if your radio doesn't have it for throttle...sounds REALLY nice with a well balanced CS 10 rotor.

Speaking of the HK 70A ESC, are you referring to the Heli version? If so, how do you change the strange startup sequence of that ESC?

Mine requires the throttle be placed in the middle for a while for it to initialize. Then if I keep the throttle off for too long (about 5sec) it'll reinitialize again.

I've never worked that out, I just keep the fan running at really low RPM...with the right fan it sounds pretty scale cause you can never cut the motor off completely.

I also go full throttle to get it spun up quickly then down to taxiing speed...

That's what I am doing now. When it happened the first few times, I thought something was wrong with my Rx.

The one I mentioned is the 'plain'(?) HK SS Series 60A/70A to 6S (or was it 7S?).
That heli one sounds a bit odd. Hopefully programmable to be 'normal', but if not it would be a half useless pain.

It's 7S I think even though HK mentions 4-8S.

Putting aside the 60-70amp spec of the HK SS 60-70 ESC, have any of you guys run it consistenly at around 65amps without damage?

I want to use them for 60-65amps continuous and I'd rather not go to the 90/100 version.

I had them in my Su-35 but when that went to HET2W30's running 60A areas I changed up to the 90A/100A models.
If an ESC says "60A" (with 70A burst) then that means use 55A max to me! lol

In general that's true. However, it seems that these HK SS ESCs(Suppo made) are under speced since I 've had these running to 70+amps for tests and the 90/100 varians to 110amps without any issues.

I guess I could try them out and observe....

Well hk is out of stock of the fan. Found a us seller that is a bit more. Leaning towards the cyclone power motor at the moment. Its more but think it will be close to the hk one with ems shipping. I never have prob getting ems stuff AFTER they finally ship it.

Yes, out of stock again! Recieved my e-mail notification of in stock at 4:25am, tried to order at 8:0 am and they are already three in the hole !!! Yea it can be hard to get popular stuff for a year or more. The turnigy 9x was on back order for months when it came out

Just order the rotor for half the price ($7.67) and get a better shroud, shaft and spinner from somehwere else.
