G-480 Groove AXI 2808-20 - Purple Power Need Not Apply

Finally got some video of the G-480 flying with the AXI 2808-20... Living proof that good things don't always come in Purple Packages.

While not as efficient as our purple friend... the 2808-20 delivers excellent performance. Hover occurs just a few clicks over 1/2 throttle with 60% inducing a slow climb-out. WOT sends the mass up and up.

The torque and responsiveness of the motor left me wanting for nothing in terms of a gearbox.

My setup:

G-480 Airframe
2808-20 w/10x6 GWS HD Prop
3x2100 TP Lipo's
CC Phoenix 25
AUW 21.5oz

ESC and Motor can be had for just over the price of one B20-15L 4:1 (Azarr has the motors for $69.99)

Looks great Bill! looked to really float. I hope to have some video and data at some point this weekend with the Groove and HIMAX 4.3 for you. Will be in touch.

I was playing around at stall for most of the trim flight... taking advantge of the good weather and thick air....
We decided that the sky was too blue (not enough clouds) to make for a descent vid... so we packed up and got back on I-70.

Yeah, sorry we didn't fly it at NEAT... Pat had me concerned about the Phoenix 25 handling those micro digital servos. I ended up throwing caution to the wind and flying it as is (heck we were going to drive right past his shop in case I smoked something).... In the end it worked out fine and is yet another reason why I only fly Castle ESC's in the stuff I care about...

Wow, is Pat paying you for the endorsements!

Yeah, too bad I didn't get to see you fly the G-480 at NEAT, but watching you fly that little cute RV-4 was a treat. Unfortunately my RV-4 is on the backburner - first comes the CAP!!!

I'm using the same motor (AXI2808-20 and CC P45 ESC ) in my 28oz 52" HOB Acro Cub. With a APC 9x4.5E and 9 KAN cells the plane cooks. Not unlimited vertical but the plane really moves out. And your using a 10x6 and hovering with it! Nice simple quiet 3 oz DD motor with lots of torque .

Yeah I know, the ESC is way overkill but I had it on hand. It was (and still is) intended for the AXI2814/12 which is sitting in a drawer right now waiting on a plane to put it in.... Say your CAP40..... or the HOB 43" P-51 waiting to be built.....

Yeah the 10x6 GWS HD prop makes alot of thrust... I think it tends to flex out a bit... but it keeps the amp draw reasonable. Motor was cool to touch... TP 2100 just slightly warm.. the amp draw was way up with the APC prop... Had to mill out the center hole on the GWS HD but it was well worth the effort for the bigger disk.

Tram, performance on the AXI was very acceptable. Likewise a PJS-1000 should work well. Still, the ultimate setup for 3D work would be that purple motor as you could swing a larger disk (11x5.5) I don't know which way you are leaning but the AXI gives great middle of the road performance.

At only $69.00 that is absolutly amazing performance. I may have to have a closer look at the 2808. I wonder why it's not a more popular motor?

Compared to the Hacker.... B20-15L... well you get the picture. The Hackers are amazing motors. But the price and simplicity on this one is right. It is odd that you don't find more of them flying. If I didn't know anything about the purple motor you would be hard pressed to convince me to give up the AXI.

Well one reason may be it is a AXI rotating can motor needs a 'strong' front mount (GWS type mounts won't work). Also you have to make sure the motor wires don't rub the rotating can (wires go back over the can and yes, it happened to me once) so require a little room and some thought for placement.... But performance wise, it sure gives my B20L/15 4:1 (in my FB) a run for the money .

As Bill states and I would have to agree : I would (from my point of view) think it is more suited for pattern/fun type flying (with a little 3D mixed in maybe) rather than true 3D flying. I also think they'd work great in warbird applications for scale flying, if you have room in the nose....

Note too that you can still use the lighter KAN1050 cells rather than heavier 1700/2400/3000 cells with the 2808.....

The video is most impressive, Bill. I love how slow your takeoff and landing took place. This grace continued in your maneuvers. That motor seems to be the perfect match for sport pattern/3D in the G-480. With a larger prop, is the G-480 true 3D capable? I was wondering about the aileron area behind the prop disc and if she can counter torque. I'm just grabbing your other videos to watch so I apologize if that's answered on there
