Yes, they are printed with working mechanisms. No assembly is required!

If there is clearance between parts - it prints it, or rather - doesn't print it. It's a big block of powder in the end and the parts that get zapped by the laser go solid, the rest remains a block of dust, which is removed afterwards.
The recommended clearance for frosted ultra detail plastic(which is a gel) is 0.1mm for moving parts, which is what I have applied to the design.

See here - 2. Moving parts

Any update on those micro retracts? I'm holding off on my order to Shapeways because I want to order everything in the one shot to maximize the shipping cost.

NC...I just got something from Shapeways to try their service out for the fist time. Looking at your varoius ducts, does the process/material yield a sufficiently smooth surface? I went with the cheaper sandstone option for my test subject.

Thx!

I think it does and so far testing the results has shown there is minimum problems with the surface affecting thrust. I am very happy.

I have 3 of the 35mm shrouds designed by Nitro and I can honestly say they are great. The surface may not be mirror smooth, but remember that boundary layer principles infer that there is often very little difference in drag/energy loss from a textured surface. In fact, this sometimes has a positive effect - we all know that a dimpled golf ball flies further than a smooth one, and many full size aircraft/gliders use turbulators to change the airflow from laminar to turbulent.

What really impressed me is how snug a 12mm inrunner fits in the housing - you could get away with using motor screws!

In the efficiency comparisons below, all of my setups (apart from the J Power Stock setup) use these shrouds.

Button Retracts update

The first draft set of retracts arrived end of last week. They look way smaller in your hand than on a large computer monitor...

They weigh a tiny 0.3g each!

My space allowance for the separate parts was too close and the sintering heat welded the parts here and there. A slight adjustment to the parts spacing and we'll try again. I did a destructive test on one of them and it's tough to say the least. I used pliers in the end to break the pieces.

what about a 25mm and/or 27-28mm case for the GP 10mm motor? Or would that be too much fan for it?
