While We're Talking Lipo...

This message from "Alan H. Siegel" <friarahs@aol.com> brought to you by EFLIGHT!

I understand the dangers inherent in charging lips and do take the necessary precautions. Before spending $40 for a LipoSack can anybody tell me if there is any realistic likelihood of Lipos erupting spontaneously while being stored in a moderate environment. Should I buy a LipoSack or a similar product to store my lipos? I have, perhaps naively, thought of them as being benign when not being charged, or in use. On the LipoSack website there are pictures of LipoSacks that have endured an event and I was a bit underwhelmed by their post event condition...understanding how much worse the damage would have been had they not been used. Is the LipoSack the best of its kind? TIA.

I'll let the experts give a possibly definitive answer. But as I
understand it, there is ALWAYS the danger of a "spontaneous"
failure. There is a lot of energy stored in even a partially
discharged pack. If there is either a manufacturing defect or some
hidden physical damage that punctures the separator between the
negative and positive "plates", this can cause a hot spot that can
then progress rapidly into a full blown short.

I always store my packs in an ammo can. I don't trust a LiPo sack to
prevent thermal damage to surroundings even if it prevents flames
from escaping.

FWIW, I noticed the other day that all my packs had miscellaneous
dents and dimples from storage and handling. Unknown how close to
penetrating the separator those are.

Just my $0.02.

Alan,

Let me qualify this by saying that Mark Wood is a good friend of mine, and
I think 3 of the 4 liposacks I own were given to me by him, and the other I
won in a raffle. That said, my objective opinion is that they are the best
product I have seen of their kind. I aquired a cheap one somewhere once,
and even after wadding, beating, and placing it in the dryer for a while it
was still stiffer than most types of plywood I have used. I gave that one
away. I have an ammo can I use as well, and keep packs separated within with
the bags for storage. I should be more careful about how I charge, as this
thread has reminded me of how complacent I am with these packs.

Actually, I think the lipo sack has a use.... when I charge at the
field (I rarely charge in the house), I worry that flames from a
combusting pack could damage the car even though the packs are on the
ground behind it. A lipo sack would be extra protection.
