Contest
*** Pizza Box Flyer - Speed Contest *top speed 75 mph* Contest ends Sept 30 2012

Pizza Box Flyers (pbf's) are outstanding low speed flying machines. The stability of a pbf in slow high A flight is incredible. They can also be very maneuverable and capable of many 3D tricks, rolling circles, hovering and torque rolls. A great indoor plane.

The pbf is not normally the best design for high speed. They usually become pitch sensitive at higher speeds. I'm hoping this contest will greatly extend the upper speed range of the pbf design.

The Rules
... keeping it fun and simple (trying to ):

1) The wing shape must have a square planform
2) Must be a foamy and must be scratch built

Pretty much anything else will be OK.
Hotwire foil, KF foil, flat sheet foil...OK
Full fuse, no fuse...OK
T-tail, canard...OK
Any size, any electric power system...OK
Tractor, prop in slot, pusher...OK
One motor, two motors, many motors...OK

Speed verification:

Radar or a video submitted for Doppler analysis.
a) Must be either upwind or cross wind level pass for single pass entry or
b) Average of two immediately consecutive level passes in opposite directions.

First prize: A large pizza! Goldguy has already volunteered to contribute towards this. I'll back him up on this prize.

Contest will end September 30, 2012

The first 'anything goes' question............

Can I round off the LE tips or does it have to be a perfect 'plan view' square?

You did mention the Drenalyn.

I would prefer to keep it square for the contest but I think rounding the corners a little is OK. Maybe 1" radius maximum or something. I'm open to suggestions??

I'd say keeping it square will be easier to evaluate and eliminate any questions about what does and does not meet the rules. Am I correct that by square you really mean square and not rectangular?

Are impellers allowed? And does it have to be a flat sheet or can it be profiled?

Now, a ducted fan pizza box would certainly be different. According to the posted rules, you can have an airfoil, doesn't need to be flat. I have mine drawn up, now to find the time for some experimentation. the challenge as Lead has suggested will be to keep it from getting pitchy at speed.

Yep, square means "span = length" for the wing. I think we should try to stay true too the pizza box.

Some rounding of the front corners is OK if you must, 1" radius max.

Ducted fan is OK. Any airfoil shape is OK

I've actually thought of doing a speed-optimized PBF in the past, at least faster than my normal ones.

My fastest setup so far has to be the Suppo 2217/6 1500Kv outrunner swinging a GWS 9075HD prop on 3S. Good for maybe 50-60mph or a little more on my past PBFs, though I've never actually verified the speed.

I have one already built and it would be a simple matter to drop in some massively fast gear....

Hey guys, y'all better hop to it. My entry is ready to fly and I just need a camera person

This setup should be good for at least 70mph unless the airframe falls apart.

Is the link correct, I don't see any pbf's.

A 70 mph pbf would be really fast!

Hmmm... I tried to post the link directly from my iPad. It works fine from that device, but now I see something is wonky when I try to click on it from my desktop.

This one should embed like normal; I've been able to embed videos straight from my iPad before but it didn't seem to want to do it this time.

I think the prize should be ramped up to an EXTRA large pizza for anyone who hits over 100 MPH.

OK, a perfect square is the rule. No problem, got my secret anti-pitch device mod all figured out.

Now, where's my 20 gauge wire................

AKA, gyro?

I think I'll spend the 5 minutes to build a couple PBFs tomorrow. I think I can make a small one that goes fast.
