How is the new Wing flying? Did you solve the flutter?

Did you get it down around the 10oz mark?

Still would like to get one shipped to the states.. Hint Hint wink Wink..

Yep, solved the issues with the first wing by making the second one correctly.
I've been flying a lot but its been very windy almost every Sunday so dialing it in has been difficult.
Finally an almost no wind day came along during the work week and I got the chance to get the final set up done.

I have gone through 3 different fins and 2 stabs with different shapes and foils and I'm satisfied with the final product. But its still too heavy for the mainland guys.

I think the super clear resin with UV blocker I use is just too thick and Im just not able to get it lighter. The wings are over an ounce too heavy.
Realistically, Im hoping to get the final weight at 10.5 ounces which is the same for the Legend.

Still moving ahead!

Glad to hear it.
I know you will get it right.
Step back and think about it and you will get it.

I will still take one at 10.5 oz.

Dave,

It took me a while to get from a 135g wing to a 125g wing. Feel free to PM me or email me at auroraf3k @ gmail.com and I might be able to help you with your weights. I'm mostly sure Tom would help too if he hasn't already.

Bottom line is materials choice and technique matter a lot more on a hollow moldie than a bagged or even solid cored moldie.

Thanks Sam,

At this point I have learned what not to do in the basic construction and know how to get the quality I need. Now its about how light is practical without having it fold up.

Nice to know I can call for help.

Thanks,

Dave

Some Bling shots.

Weight of all the paint adds about 16-18 grams total.

The production ships will be much less vibrant. The colors don't show up well in the photos but, in the air they look like neon lights. No mistaking which plane is yours.

Dave,

Gorgeous ships! Are you bagging the tails or are they being done in molds?

Your paint math matches mine. I've reduced paint quantity and switched to painting in the molds, which has helped but like you mentioned the colors aren't as nice. I also cannot achieve respectable weights with the 80 g/m^2 Textreme, if you are the carbon is dry. The best right now is the Samurai Carbon for looks, weight and strength. Vlad is great but not as pretty, plenty strong though!

Nice!

The colors are great, but weight rules all in airplanes. Go for it!

Sam,

My tails are bagged. With out having a CNC to cut molds and cores there's no way to get them as light as bagging. Maybe someone will offer to build my tails for me!

I have made 4 wings with the spread tow now and I have to say that Im over it.
I love being able to get a crisp clean line to the carbon edge, with a little finesse and Lacquer mind you. But after curing and some time in the sun the pattern shows through on the wing surface a lot.
I have backed it with .75 cloth and this lessens it a bit but not enough. This is not what Im looking for.
To have an efficient wing the D tube needs to stay clean. Looks like Im going back to 2.4 woven carbon. Some of my test wings still have a much smoother surface.

Also the cost of Spread Tow is crazy stupid. When I use the last of my small supply Im done with it.

The new wing I have in the mold today is using a lightly painted top and bottom color done in the mold like the Blasters. Im hoping to use lighter cloth
and back to ProSet. Forget MGS.... way to expensive to get it shipped to Hawaii. While my clear resin looks good, its not doing the job I need.

If it works out well I'll post photos.

Last I priced it, the 2.4 woven was also stupid expensive. I really wish carbon prices would drop!
