Build off for FROG designs October 1st 2011 to April 30th 2012

/Arising out of my build log for the double size Frog Tom Tit, there appears to be some interest in having a Build Off exclusively for Frog models.

I would be willing to administer this and am therefore floating the idea to gauge possible support.

Plans are available from many sources:

The Vintage Plans thread in this forum has a good number of Frog models listed for downloading - access the index as listed in the first post of the thread.

www.houseoffrog.co.uk have many of the smaller Frog models available for downloading

www.model-plans.co.uk can provide hard copies at reasonable cost of a large number of Frog designs.

Peter Williams has a large collection of almost all Frog plans and will supply paper copies, also at reasonable cost. He doesn't have a web site but can be emailed; anyone wanting his email address should PM me.

No doubt there are also other sources.

I would envisage the contest starting on October 1st and running for seven months to cover the northern hemisphere winter "building season". A build log would be nice as these are always interesting and it is hoped most people would provide at least a short one, but not mandatory, minimum requirements being an initial entry on this thread with details of the model being entered and then photograph(s) of the finished model either posted on the build log if there is one or on this thread prior to the closing date of 30th April 2012. I do not propose making flying photos or video a condition of entry, but these are always appreciated.

Any model kitted by Frog, regardless of age, would be eligible, either built to original size or scaled up or down, using any form of power, and flown as originally (F/F, C/L, radio) or otherwise - e.g. a radio version of a control-line original. I would list all confirmed entries, and links to any build logs at the beginning of this thread.

Please post expressions of interest or suggestions for changes to the format so it can be decided if the idea is a goer before the proposed starting date.

I will build a Frog Senior Series Widgeon x 2. I need another V-tailed plane.

Good on you George. My choice will be an enlarged ( X3.5) electric powered Speedy. Low wing, rudder/elevator and an elliptical wing - should be an interesting challenge

Will it be ok if I put ailerons on it? I think that it would blast if fitted with them.

Absolutely no objection to ailerons from me Rabidrue. Should be interesting, were you thinking of just on the bottom wing or on both?

Ray; good choice, it's a really cute little model, my nephew built one last year for his son. Should scale up nicely although the elliptical wing will be a challenge. Are you thinking of ailerons too, it would make sense on this design.

Indeed it would George , which is why I am not using them

Friend of mine has a Galahad low wing with no ailerons which seems to fly fine so I thought I would try it on the Speedy. Had originally intended to scale up the KK Phantom but the Speedy is very similar. Could all end in tears - we will see.

Anyway - plan downloaded from the Frog website, scaled to size (40" span) and printed out using Tileprint. Wing section chosen and printed out using Profili. This gives me the basic outline and I more or less design the structure as I build.

Building to start in a few weeks when my current model is finished.

Are gliders acceptable? Most of my flying is on the slope. I fancy the Wren at about twice size as the twin fins pose an interesting challenge.

Scott: glad you have got your plan, I'll be following with interest as I am also contemplating a Widgeon, but in 1.5x size to suit a little motor/esc I have.

Ray; I suspected you might go for the R/E option. No reason why it shouldn't work fine if the dihedral is right. As a matter of interest I used exactly the same dihedral angle on the Tom Tit as on the original, and it is perfect, with a relatively small rudder the model is amazingly agile and shows no bad habits at all. Mind you, bipes are a bit different to low wingers! Looking forward to seeing it take shape.

Bob; yes, of course, gliders are more than welcome as long as they are Frog. The Wren is a pretty little thing and should make a really nice scale up, I'll be fascinated to see how it works out.

Judging by the way mine flies on R/E powerful ailerons like that should make it pretty aerobatic. I guess you could link them mechanically but my choice would be four micro servos running off two channels and mixed at the Tx, to keep the mechanical linkages short and slop free. Then again, remembering that elevator set-up on the Snake you are probably a better engineer than I am!

Thinking back Ray, one of the nicest rudder-only models I had was a TD.049 powered pulse rudder equipped Swanee (Johnny Bowmer) low winger. This had adequate but by no means excessive dihedral BUT also some washout (3/16" I seem to remember) built into each tip, and even without elevator the turns were just beautiful. My RBC Spitfire, which, of course, does have ailerons also has the washout and the handling is exemplary. Looking at the Speedee wing shape, a bit of built-in washout might be a good insurance policy. Just a thought.

I might just do another larger Linnet, 72" ish.. but with ailerons.
This is a pic of my x2 Linnet which I built in 2007 - still flys today, and now sports wheel spats...
