Nex-7 Best Aerial Photo and Video Camera ?

I recently stumbled upon the pre-order screen on Amazon.com listing the new Sony Nex-7 camera. I believe this camera will become the best option for pro / prosumer level aerial photo and video as well as traditional photo and video.

My Blog Post Today About the Nex-7

I own and fly a Nex-3 daily and it has certainly earned its keep.

What do you all think?

I am a pro photographer. I have tried the Nex-3 and compared it to the same scenes shot with a Nikon DSLR. Sony is excellent for videos but results from their still photographs do not impress me. The size of the compacts is attractive for AP work but they weight more than the average compacts like Lumix TZ10 or Canon S95.

But what Nikon, what lenses, what lighting, what type of scene? This statement is a bit too general. The NEX-3 will smoke the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ10 or the Canon S95 but they aren't even in the same class of camera. I appreciate your response but it makes it sound like you are saying "since one Nikon is better than one Sony then all Nikons are better than all Sonys" We need more info and remember we are talking about the Nex-7 here not the Nex-3. And actually the Nex-3 is very limited in its video capabilities so that make your statement even a little more unreasonable. Please expound.

For those that that want a Sony 1920x1080P at 60fps and cant afford a Nex, I highly recommend the HX9V, the video quality on those cameras is incredible.

Although I've never personally mounted one on anything that flies, yet.

Yes. The HX9V is certainly a cool little camera. My local friend has a Y6 and the HX9V. He hasn't let it leave the ground yet though. I can't wait to see what it will do. But it too leaves a lot to be desired that the NEX-7 is promising. For those serious about AP and AV this looks to be one of the best new cameras thus far! Check out the specs.

it states that you cannot turn off steady shot..... do you think that would be an issue for the vibrations of a multirotor or plane?

The HX7/9 has standard and active steady shot, this was done with active steady shot enabled.

Here are two 20s clips.. This was filmed with an HX7V on a Twinstar II

the HX7V only does 1920x1080 at what they call 60i , the HX9V does 60p, which I would have used but it belongs a family member who doesnt want it mounted on an airplane

These are actually .mts files (they didnt have .mts as a valid download file type) and may need to be renamed to play correctly, but they are direct unmodified clips from the camera, I like the fact that when you pause the video, it looks more like a photo and less like a video which normally has blurring and smearing on the stills.

Although not Nex quality, the HX7/HX9's have composite out.

good to know, it might be a camera I get to try out.

I have a Nikon D5000 that I could sell and if this camera is good enough, i think I could justify doing it.

thanks for the ideas

Apparently not Tarro. It says AF in photo mode but no mention of video.
