how many volts can a 550 size BRUSHED motor take?

My ESC went out in my Tower Hobbies electric boat. It has a 550 size brushed motor in it. The ESC that was in there only used NiMh packs, but im wanting to get an ESC that will accept my 3s 2200mah Lipos. I have found a candidate for a ESC, but can my motor handle the 11.1v? From the factory I was using 8.4v Nimh packs with no problem, but my 3s Lipos will be delivering 11.1v.

Will this work?

And here is the ESC. The boat is a small boat, maybe only about 20" in length. Im assuming the 15amp will be ok.

15 Amp ESC seems pretty small for a 550 motor, especially since you want to overcharge it.
You want power and do need to get a new esc anyway. So I would go brushless if I'm you. It does not have to be much more expensive. I'd say get the cheapest 60Amp esc and a 3650 brushless motor. A bigger motor will be overkill, not that it might not be fun...
You will appreciate the reliability and of course the extra power.

It all depends on what the voltage rating is on the motor. I've got 550 motors rated at only 6 volts & some rated at 18 volts.
8.4 & 9.6 volt rated motors will run on a 3s pack with no problems but you may need to prop down a bit as the revs will be quite a bit higher.
You will need to find out the voltage rating of the motor first.
Paul.

A 3s2200mah pack is also really small for a boat this size, you'll want the extra weight of a bigger pack to help keep the boat on the water.

i sugest that you invest in a 50 amp ESC. i experienced the same downfall in my boat. So i got a 50 amp ESC and ive never looked back.

50a is way more than a brushed 550 motor will draw, I'd be shocked if it pulls 20a.

This ESC is perfect for the job, will take 3s lipo as its rated to 10 cells nimh which fully charged is close to 14 volts. 40 amp as well.

Your motor may well handle 3s, only one way to find out with the worst result being that you smoke a 10 dollar motor.

I have three of these in my Wallypower 118' model. Each one drives a speed 600 motor & a 32mm water jet pump. On 3s Lipo (2 x 5000mah in parallel). They have Lipo cutout, and a 1A BEC Excellent little ESC's.

I've been running this esc for 4yrs now and never any problems .It's the Ripmax Xtra 35 amp brushed 5 to 12 cell nima or lipo 2 to 4 cell lipo . They have 7amp to 50 amp lipo friendly esc . Not the cheapest . you can find them at http://globalservices.globalhobby.com Look at some car brushed esc .there are a ton of them on Ebay , even found some water proof ones .

Highflyer bill, that link does not have any ripmax products? and no search function, im googling found these: im in the states tho: http://www2.ripmax.net/Category_List...ry=060-050-100
im having a hard time finding a lipo friendly brushed esc w/ these features:
Reverse
BEC
Lipo 2s & 3s
lipo 3v voltage cut
30 - 60 Amps

I looked on ebay and contacted many sellers, and am still looking other sites online, im thinking im just going to settle for a traxxas xl5(9.6v max) or run a lipo low voltage indicator w/ buzzer?

I forgot to mention, that I've also got a couple of these in my tank landing barge driving 785 motors, spinning 45mm 3 blade pros on 2s lipo.

Although is says 150A, I don't think is really is if you look at the wire size & the type of connectors.
They have two sets of output cables for twin motors but I only use one set on each controller.
I've also used them on 3s & 4s lipo in other models on 600 & 700 motors. No problems.
they have reverse. No Lipo cutout though. I just use an alarm module like this
