wing failure

Hi Guys,

Fantastic work all these scale-mods. I wish I had the patience to do it. I bought the model to fly around in a scale-ish way. Just stock setup.

But is all this work you are doing worth it?????

The only mod what I did was install the HK drop bombs. The bombs are almost the same size as the one from FMS, only the pylon is way off.

I had a some of fun dropping the bombs. Works flawless.

The p-47 has now 20 flights on the counter and the wing is showing signs of failure.
The front spar is way to short. The manual shows long spars, but delivered in the kit are short.

In flight (no aerobatics) the wings bend a lot.

Close inspection now reveals that the wing is failing where the front tube stops.

The quality of the video isn't very good but gives a good idea. The crack in the wing is visible. When you look at the gear doors you can see how much the wing flexes. This gives a big displacement at the wingtip.

FMS Giant P47 wing failure (0 min 22 sec)

This is the mod I did. I installed the fiberglass spar with epoxy.

The epoxy is still drying so i didn't see the result yet.

Are there others with the same problem??

I will think twice before buying a +400$ kit from FMS

To say is it worth it is a revelant...To some yes ...to some no. As for me...Yes ...I wanted something nicer and different. there is actually not that many mods on this (though it may look that way)...just the canopy and turtle back and a little repainting with new decals, All the rest is stock.

I actually did that same thing with those Bomb drops from HK on my Mustang..and have a pair here for this bird, (I love them , and they work Great)....but first I'm going to try something a litte different I came up with.

As for the spar thing...that is something I noticed right off the bat in the beginning and do have a concern there, if it becomes an issue....I had already planned on doing just like what you're doing

@ brandonmoon: Don't get me wrong. I like your work. I'm really jealous at what yo are doing. I just don't have the time for it. I'm already happy I can go out to fly for an hour or so.

I'm just a bit disappointed in FMS. With the experience on their P-51 I hoped they would resolve the problems they had, but apparently they don't learn.

Brandon, THAT'S FREAKING INCREDIBLE MAN!!! What a work of art. You, sir, are a master at your craft.

Are the decals water-slide type? If so, then did you use decal-set to get them to lay down so nicely?

That's probably one of the nicest foam warbirds I've ever seen to be perfectly honest.

Thanks, yes they are and yes I did. I made them my self with my printer and water slide decal paper from Micro-Mark. and sealed them with Krylon Flat clear spray

No worries on my part, But I disagree with what you said about the FMS statement...I think they are doing a better job than other's I've delt with and are working the issues we all have identified to the with due diligance to get them corrected ....Just a little patienceon our part is needed that's all

Is it worth it ?

Some like to just buy a plane n put it together and go fly... (not saying that's what u do).

It worth it in experience and gaining valuable knowledge. Honestly, i feel you get more money out of your plane tinkering and modding then it just sitting there in the hangar day in and day out waiting for u to fly it. I'd get bored if i wasn't modding & it keeps u into the hobby. Plus you dont have the same plane as everyone else and add that lil personal touch.

BM i agree that gotta be one of the best foamies done BM-style!
