"If" ........the big "if"...... You get your fan assembled and running and THEN find that there is a bit of vibration or resonance you can try turning the spinner in increments to fine tune to your satisfaction.
Basically just follow the directions that come with the fan......

No, Bob. Its a complete scratch build

I think the JHH F-4 wud be easier to do with a single larger fan this time, with current level of fan/pack development. A knife-little 5incher shud even be doable.

Cheers,

Phil

What motor?

I doubt you oblonged the adapter. You should be able to bring all three just into contact with the shaft check for run out and gradually tighten the set screws in a rotating pattern and check for run out.

I have "undersize" adapters for the set screw style, just shoot me a PM or email with your address and I will send you new ones of both standard and undersize.

NOTE: Beware motor shafts with a factory cut "flat" for setscrew, some are so large that the adapter cannot properly center on the shaft. For the older set screw adapters I do not recommend a flat other than a very small hand ground one of approximately 1/16" width, just enough to meet one of the grub screws.
In any case, if you have a flat on the motor shaft, locate the flat (if any) and center then tighten a grub screw in that one first......

BTW: for those so inclined, the standard for 5mm shaft is nominally 4.975mm. The undersized is nominally 4.93mm for some of the less than standard motor shafts out there = "other than Neu or HET700-60 or 700-68"
The really optimum fit would be one where the adapter has to be heated in order to slip on the shaft then shrink to fit upon cooling. No chance for slop or having to fiddle with set screw tension other than tighten them up.
-Mike

Very good info on the shaft sizes Mike. I wish all the EDF motors we buy would come without flats such as the HET's. Hopefully manufactures will catch on. Also I believe most problems with anyone's fans are usually centered around run-out on bad fitting set screw type adapters. I wish more manufacture's would use clamp type adapters. Mike do you recommend eliminating the flat with JB weld or such when using a clamp type adapter? Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi Robert

I found the problem with my fan 80mm unit the motor shaft has .005 runout in it. The funny thing is the shaft is true from the motor bearing out about a 1/4" then is off from there. I bought the motor used so I guess I should of checked it. Lesson Learned. There is a machine shop where I work so I should be able to clamp the shaft in a jig to straighten it with a arbor press and a dial inductor.

thanks for the help

I slotted the holes in the fan mounting tabs and fitted some servo grommets to rubber mount the fan and it sounds even better than when it was hard mounted.
