Das Plas-Stick (DPS) - E version

This is a 75% scale of a DPS. The WS is 36".

I have had a partially built DPS (fuse only) hanging in my workroom for over a year - just can't seem to get away from the electrics to get this going. So, I decided to try an electric version.

The fuse is 4mm coro in lieu of gutter pipe. It's 2" square, 5 sided. The firewall & nose gear is something I had lying around from an EPS Sapac T-34. If it doesn't hold up, I'll go with a HDPE firewall & mount the nose gear to the backside. The nosegear is fixed - hopefully I can steer on the ground using rudder.

The rest of the plane is pretty standard from the DPS plans.

I'm using a 2830-11 400 sized motor with a 9" GWS prop - That's what I had lying around. Battery is a 1300 mah 3S.

She is a bit on the hefty side - I was hoping for 24-26 oz. & she came in at 29 oz. AUW. I think the motor/prop should be OK - barely.

As they say, there's only 1 way to find out .......

Looks pretty good. Yes you are correct, there is only way to find out if it flies or not.

Well, she flies - and pretty good at that!

The power is adequate - she just won't be doing any long vertical climbs. I'm going to try a 3 blade prop for hopefully a bit more thrust - I think the motor can handle it.

The wing develops a lot of lift. My other SPAD builds have used the KFm wing, so this is a noticeable difference.

My second-hand nose gear broke after my second return to earth (I can't in good conscience call them landings ...) - so I flew the rest of the day as a tail dragger. I'll be moving the gear forward and keeping her this way.

She is very pitchy, but I'm sure I can get her dialed in - just need to dummy down the elevator throws some, and add lots of expo.

Very nice! Especially after you dialed back the control surface throws.

My mini DPS has now been converted to conventional gear, after the nose gear broke off. The gear is just at the wing LE.

I needed to put just over 1 oz. of lead in the nose - which I hate doing. I'm going to see if I can shift the wing to avoid the lead.

I tried a 9X5 3 blade GWS, but decided the original 9X5 2 blade performed better. I might try a 10X6 next time - I think the motor will handle it.

gl - My full sized one is a tail dragger. Think about it next time. It's simpler.

Night Ops

I have added LED's for night flying.

In the wing, I attached a strip of white to the forward side of the wing spar. This gives a nice glowing effect - really nice white on top & the red on the underside is also pretty good.

For the wingtips, I soldered a 3 light segment of Blue & Orange/Amber, to give me some visual orientation. I cut out a little piece (1"X3") of the red wing bottom & covered the holes clear packing tape. This really lets the true colors of the light shine out on the bottom.

The tail feathers simply have some white lights on the vertical fin & the open underside of the fuse.

Got Bomb ?

I have changed out the motor to a 450 size. She flies much better with the additional power.

I also added the Quanum Bomb Drop System to her. With my tallish gear, there is enough room underneath for ground clearance.

Parachute Drop

Dropping a Military Flare Parachute with a tennis ball glued to the end.

The chute is about 36" diameter & packs inside a little pouch. The pouch is tied off to the plane & a simple servo/rubber band release mechanism allows gravity to do its' thing.

Wow, that's awesome that your plane flew that well with the wing that crooked! LOL Awesome video. The T28's kinda like bringing a knife to a gun fight, eh?
