Windrider 48" Hawker Hurricane - General Build Thread

OK, mine just arrived in this afternoon's post, and it looks marvelous. Ivor says it is pretty much spot on for scale and he doesn't miss much. Thank you for another terrific model, Ming Lou

Okay, Ming Lou's original thread here: http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1210208 has a lot of good info, but it is pretty much buried under near 200 pages of largely horse manure. Now that a bunch of us actually have our grubby little mitts on the kit, it seemed appropriate to begin a build thread. I hope all the other Hurri builders will post here too.

I hope that this will be like the Windrider Dauntless thread, where people share ideas, problems and their solutions, modifications and particularly since we are running point here, what power combinations work best. If anyone has posted info in the other thread that they think will be useful here, by all means re-post it where it is easier to find. I have all my Hurricane books strewn about, trying to decide what to do first. I like Ivor's idea to build the cockpit before gluing the fuse halves together, it looks like it was designed for exactly that. Maybe Ty or Keith will make a vac-form cockpit mod for it, who knows?

Looking forward to the build and the conversations, gents.

Regards,
Jeff

I can see why it took so long to design. Among other things the flap block allows you to either glue the flaps closed if you don't want them, or they are pre-hinged if you want to use them. Tricky bit of engineering, given that it is a split flap. The instructions call for a max of 40 degrees deflection.

Thanks for the kit pics, sfluck. Much nicer than mine.

I have hit my first snag. The MP46 is just too darned big to fit. Looks like the 32 is about the right size, but everybody is out of stock, even eRC. I have an EMRC 670 kV motor that I bought on eBay a lifetime ago. It specs okay, but I know nothing about the motor, its reliability or anything else. It says it's good up to 1000W, a claim of which I am extremely dubious. The real issue is whether the FMS prop will fit. Guess I will wait until my order from pw-rc arrives. I thought of just fitting the FMS motor and running the lot on 4S, but of course everyone is out of the FMS motor as well, Sheesh.

Guy's isn't this a 48"ish model? Surely a motor up to say 500w would be enough and on 3s? What am I missing?

The kit does look to be a thing of beauty, looking forward to seeing all of yours develop. Those flaps look to be a thing of genious .

Stuart, 500W will be plenty. Plan A was to run the Power 46 spinning a 13/9/3 for probably about that output. Figured the big motor would help with c/g. My point about the EMRC motor is simply that given what I regard as wildly exaggerated claim about power, who knows if the motor will stand up. I have also ordered a Power 32 from China, just in case.

Jeff

I wonder if it's even possible to use a 13" propeller, if you compare the windrider hurri to the full scale it seems like the landing gear might be a bit shorter. So maybe there is very little space between propeller and ground left. It just occured to me, for shure we know it when someone finished building the hurri Who's already in the garage building?
