DoubleHorse/Shuang Ma 9116 4ch single rotor

Well, may as well get the ball rolling. I got one of these 9116 helis recently. Here's what I posted in the 9100 thread:

Wow, I'm impressed! The new 9116 arrived 1/2 hour ago. Photos to follow once I have a look for myself. Naturally it's on charge already...
First impressions:
Build quality is similar to the 9100. It has a really nice looking 'stainless steel' chassis rather than the painted carbon fibre of the 9100. 120degree swash which pivots on the shaft rather than out the front. It's just gotta work better than the original 9100/9104 swash. Canopy is very close to the left hand servo linkage and may interfere with it. Overall it looks nearly identical physically to the 9100 so many of the 9100 spare parts should work with it too. That alone should save us some money there.
The controller is just plastic and looks & feels a bit rough to me but it does have a LARGE LCD on it. Aparently operates in Mode 1 or Mode 2. When batteries are installed I might find out what it shows us. Who reads manuals anyway?

Pretty ordinary video here but I wanted to be first on YouTube
9116 - the first flight (0 min 51 sec)

I think forward speed is much like the basic unmodified 9100 as you'd expect. I really haven't had enough flying time & 4ch experience to do a forward speed run yet, I keep trying to steer it with my right thumb and it's going all over the place. I'm running it in Mode 2 which seems closest to what I'm used to.

A few interesting things I've found:
You MUST turn the controller on first, and you only have 4 seconds from then to turn the 9116 on for them to lock onto each other - it's a digital controller. (thinks) I wonder how many you can fly in the same area? [found out later you can run up to ten at the same time]
When the battery is getting low, the motor will shut off after you land rather than running out of juice in the air - a nice touch I thought.
The controller display is backlit and very clear. Among all the doodads on the screen is the battery voltage for the controller. Handy.
The controller only uses 6 x AA batteries and can run on alkaline or nicads.

hi.. coming in to support the thread.

I think turning on the controller first and than turning on the bird is 'standard procedure' for all heli...

and is very nice that it using 6 AA batteries...
save 2 batteries from the FM TX that 9100 use..

I think this belongs in the micro forum. It's basically a Walkera CB180 clone. It's not close to 450 size.

Why post a micro heli thread in the mini section?

Also, how do you keep it from spinning out of control with only one single rotor?

One of the Mods put the DH 9100 (exact same sized heli) thread in this forum ... for some reason. Not to get off on a tangent, but what defines the heli as Micro, Mini or Large? If the DH 9100 and 9116 are indeed "Micro", then both those threads should be moved to the appropriate Forum.

Smokes ... looks like it handles fairly well. What's the price on the DH 9116?

I paid AU$115 with free shipping from the land of the long wall but that page has disappeared. Took 7 days to arrive.

It's available here: http://au.alibaba.com/products/rc-helicopter-9116.html and also here: http://www.myshopping.com.au/ZM--121...ED_Transmitter for AU$120/free shipping.
There are others, I just searched for "9116 helicopter"

More video from the same flight as before. In some ways a better example of it's capabilities:
9116 - first trimming flight.mp4 (3 min 28 sec)

This was the first time I had the 9116 in the air so the flight's a bit rough, especially the landing.

Later on in the workshop I took some closeups of the swashplate in operation. Well, I'm sure someone's interested
9116 - swashplate movement (0 min 54 sec)

I'm interested, thank you! Seems a logical next step from my 9100 and one more step towards my 6ch Belt CP that just scares me!!

Have to see if anyone will ship one to the UK now...

I've had mine for 2 weeks now and I having fun with it. The only problem I have had with it was the battery must have shorted, causing my charger to burn out. Replaced it with one from my 9100 and working fine.

Just found it on ebay:

- looks like they charge a lot for delivery; but I think I'll wait until it will be available in Down Under (I think it should be before Xmas) and in meantime play with my 9100.

Smokes,
In the two videos you made of it flying. How did it perform? would you say it has better control than the 9100?

Anyone out there with the 9116 can tell me how it performs? I really really want to get it but i DO NOT want it to be like the 9100. I just want to fly it and not worry about any swash mods. Thanks

I think the Double Horse is "hobby grade", you can find replacement parts everywhere online. maybe a lower end hobby grade

and the fact that i have TWO 9100's, i technically have lots of parts to spare. I don't want to fly 3 ch anymore, not to mention the way the 9100 performs
