I'm basically planning on running it until the noise either gets worse or I notice it getting hotter after flights. I said that roughly 100 flights ago and it's still doing great and hauling the SHP around nicely. My 72g on the other hand has some weird issues but it also has 300+ flights on it. They're cheap enough motors that I'm worried about buying a new one eventually.

Yeah I think I'll do the same. I'll start bringing my IR gun next time to regularly measure the motor temp.

No problem, glad I could help. I got nine guys at my field together to buy SHP's back in October 2010. My friend Warren was the first to mention the noise after he had flown it for about a month. We ran both planes side by side and they both sounded the same. It was a concern for a while, but I really don't even hear it anymore unless someone mentions it.... all three motors have been running fine and I have seriously abused the original. I have not heard anything from any of the original gang of nine about a motor failure. Some of the planes have not survived, of course....

A question about the old Extra 300 SHP.

I purchased a yellow Extra 300 SHP about 3 weeks ago off the ceiling at a Sacramento hobby shop. Once I got it home I noticed that the vertical stab was not pushed in all the way. I was able to remove it and now it will seat all the way down. I had to remove the hinges on the rudder too as the alignment was now not right. Since I have taken it apart this far I also removed the elevator. Its halves were connected by a wire with 90 degree bends on the end that plugged into each elevator half. I know the new design has a flat stick which connects them and is much more solid.
I am thinking I could cut a half circle behind the horizontal stabilizer and join the 2 halves together with a flat stick like the new design. Has anyone ever attempted this with success?

I will have this plane back up in the air tomorrow. I sent in my hitec hs 65 to hitec and they fixed it for me free of charge. now it is time to get this bird back in the air.

Hi MBH, My version 2 yellow has the same phenolic "stick" between the elevator halves as my red version 3. I don't know if the version 1 used wire or not, but it really seems likely to me the original builder did an "old school" modification on his own. A piano wire elevator joiner was pretty common back in the days of DIY kits. It should have been epoxied in though. If you have both elevator halves off, changing it back to the original design shouldn't be too hard. Just make sure you use the same material 3dhs uses (looks like printed circuit board to me). I don't think a piece of basswood or spruce would be strong or rigid enough.

Did you try setting the icharger to balance as it charges, opposed to balancing at the end?

Yep, phenolic. Strong too, tried to break an old one and it took a LOT of force to snap.
