DEC 2011 HOLIDAY ELECTRIC FLY & RC EXPO (HEF) - Geneva OH

Thanks to a great time last year (see page 137 of Sept MA mag) we are doing it again, the Holiday Electric Fly and R/C Expo is on for this year. An AMA-sanctioned electric flying event, hosted by the MARCS club of NE Ohio. Sponsored By Horizon Hobby and some other fine sponsors!
Indoor flying at NE Ohio, at the SPIRE INSTITUTE sports complex's olympic-size track and field building.
First weekend of December 2011 - Dec 2,3,4 (Friday/Saturday/Sunday)

Website: http://hef-rcexpo.com

This quick 15-second video shows the inside of the building:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qND1o...eature=related

For those of you who came last year (107 pilots and more than 400 models!) this year's event will be similar in style - but we're hoping to grow this year. Lots of new stuff happening!
Event CD: Tony Husak at: racer749@gmail.com

Here are some highlights!!

- Souvenier Event T-Shirt for the first 100 registered pilots!
- Fun events, including full-contact combat!
- Vendors, in-house concessions, and pilot prizes!
- TEN flight stations at the HUGE main racetrack flying area - and separate areas for 3D and Micro
- 600 feet long x 300 feet wide main stadium - flying area is football-field size. 70-foot ceiling at highest point with indirect lighting. The field has artificial turf and is surrounded by a 10-lane Olympic track and an extra 100 feet at each end.
- pits area with tables and some electricity provided for pilots
- pilot prizes awarded continuously, plus we'll have some prizes for flying contests
- climate controlled inside, free parking outside (sorry, no camping in the parking lot)
- grandstand for 4000+ spectators!
- nearby motels and there is a Wendy's, McDonalds, Pizza Hut, and two restaurants across the main road nearby.
- Geneva OH is right on interstate 90, and the venuie is right next to the exit (about 1hr drive from Cleveland OH or Erie PA)

- Note, planned demos will not shut down flying, unlike at many other events. We promise to keep the disruptions from the contests to a minimum.
- Several contests are planned, including full-contact combat ($5 fee, pot to the winner), micro carrier, pylon races, Musical Airplanes and others TBD or we'll do them on the fly. Some of these events will require a shut down of open flying for short periods of time, but most will not. The 3D and Micro areas are separate so their events will not affect the main flying area!

As reminders:
- No food or drink allowed on the track floor, must remain in grandstand area.
- no combustion engines allowed
- 16oz max model weight with battery (exceptions require approval by CD)
- early birds on Friday will have to endure set-up of tables, etc
- Please see the official rules and info on the HEF website (link at the top here)
- Register early on the HEF website with Paypal, or pay at the door.

Please post if you attended last year!!

This was shot early in the day before the event had started.

Giant B17 flying at HEF - last year (2010)

Here's a video of a gigantic 8-foot foamie flying indoors at last year's HEF event. Steve Lawrie flies the Rabid Models B17. The model only weighs about 4 pounds and uses 1-ounce motors. Just to prove that this place is big enough!

On the video, the far right side of the flying area is where the micros will be, and the far left side is where the 3D area is. The main racetrack area is big enough for everyone!

NOTE to PILOTS: large planes like this require inspection and approval from the event CD to fly. We recommend 1-pound as a "normal" weight limit for models at this event! The B17 has a very light wing loading and flies slowly, which is why it was allowed.

(This is a 4:37 minute video)

This show is great!
We had so much fun last year, and saw a lot of customers- if you have the chance, you have to come- the venue is huge! It is the last indoor event before the holidays (at least in our area) a great place for picking up gifts too!
Hope we see you there!

Nearby Hotels

This link will display a list of TWENTY hotels in the general area of Geneva Ohio. At this time we can't recommend anything in particular. There is a Motel-6 across the street and several others within just a few miles.

Local map

This link will show you a MAPQUEST map showing the address of the flying site (1822 South Broadway Geneva, Ohio 44041) in relation to the nearby towns of Geneva and Harpersfield, and Interstate I-90.

Local Street Map

By clicking on the various icons at the top you can see the local hotels and restaurants (use the left and right button to see all th icons) and of course you can zoom in or out.

You can also click on "get directions" and get the travel directions from wherever you live - it will show you the number of miles and how long the trip will take.

definitely attending this one again, as previously stated "YOU MUST GO". I may even have an 8foot B-24 done up just for this event.

Hmmm so what does it take

what does it take to get this put over on the front page where the events are? can somebody look into that- it would be great to have it where the neat is. I don't know enough about RC groups to do it.......

Looks like a great site. How many registered pilots were there last year?

Are the 50 goody bags for the first 50 pilots to register or arrive?

CHANGE IN PLANS - we are producing an event T-shirt which will be given to the first 100 registered pilots, instead of "goody bags". Advance registrations will be first on the list. Don't worry about goodies- we have a large number of great pilot prizes donated by HORIZON already and will be drawing pilots names for awarding other goodies and prizes all day long throughout the event!

We had 107 pilots last year, that was our first year. We expect to double that this year, because of some exciting new stuff that's happening (more on that later). The facility is huge and looked completely empty with 107 pilots - it can easily hold more than 5000 people.
