Herr laser cut kits toxic?

I recently bought a Herr Ryan STA kit and noticed that it and all the other Herr kit boxes at the local Hobby Shop had a little warning sticker proclaiming that it contained a chemical "determined by the state of california to cause cancer" etc. etc--essentially the same warning you see on bottles of dope or spray paint, or anything containing solvents or toulene.

I found it odd. What could this refer to? Are solvent chemicals used in laser cutting? I have never seen such a warning on a balsa kit. Only on finishing supplies and adhesives.

I've noticed that a lot of electrical conectors (servo wires, aileron extenders, plugs etc.) and some RC components have the same warning.

I think what they're trying to tell you is that you shouldn't eat this stuff (or smoke it).

The answer is very simple. Just don't build the kit in California .

Probably the charred cut ends of the balsa. Just like the charcoal burnt hamburger - a known carcinogin.

It's the plastic. Honest!
Pretty much anything made from petrocarbons or the petrocarbons themselves (gas pumps) has that sticker affixed to it.

Funny thing is that you can see that label as an engraved sign afixed to hotel lobbys in CA

Well, if the label isn't refering to anything directly, my thinking is that it's there because the plans and instructions refer to the use of things like dope, CA, ambroid etc. By the way, the kit was purchased in NJ, arguably the most toxic state in the union.

I just got back from the great state of California. Had myself quite a laugh when reading all of those "Warning you'll die of cancer here!" placards. Best one is something like "Wine and distilled spirits contain chemicals determined by the State of California to cause cancer." Well its interesting that the doctors and researchers in the rest of the world has a slightly different view on wine (esp. red) in moderation of course.

'Nother funny story about Cali and environmental law. A customer of ours (one of the two companies building rockets) had to remove wax masking from a gold plated panel. The solvent used was banned in California, but they had been using it safely for years (and had all the proper hoods, scrubbers, and reclimation equipment, etc.). So with the new law instead of doing it in California cleanly and safetly, they were forced to do it in Mexico (and I strongly doubt with the same eye on safety and environmental concern).
