1406/2y w/ 3.7:1 what setup and plane?

Looking to put this into a hotliner plane. Any idea on what props to put on this motor on which cell counts?

Thanks,

Jay

this motor has been used in 10 cell F5b with a 15" folder and about 70 amps. For short bursts, of course. For more sedate flying, 10 cells and a 13 or 14" prop will be fine.

With 7 cells, you would need a big prop.

Hey now,
I've got one of those motors, I haven't found anything like the right plane for it yet. I got it used in a "Jerry" it was slowish and not much fun to fly. Right now I've got it in a DCH Super Dragonfly
It's much better there, 70* climb out, plenty of power and almost fast. I'm running it with a 14x9 prop with a 25* hub on ten 2400cps I'm getting 48.6 amps with this set up.
I too would like a better model for this nifty motor although I s'pose I could put it on that old Wingo;-)

Paul Willenborg has this set up in his Bonito. I Have the 1409 2y 2.5:1 in mine with a 14 9.5 prop.

Jay,

You're going to need a lot more controller with that prop on 10 cells- it'll be drawing 70+ amps! My Bonito pulls 60+ on 10 cells with a 14 x 9.5. This is a great low-cost motor- I have literally several hundred flights on my Bonito over a five year period, all at 60+ amps, motor and gearbox are still humming along.

Just switched to 2600 nimh packs from 1250scr's, gained a bunch of weight but also gained a bunch of run time. I consistently get 30 minute flights in dead air. If I work a few thermals I often land without running the pack out.

RobII,

Just re-read your message- if you're using the 3.7:1 gearbox you should be seeing much higher current with that setup. Check the pack, or if you're running a higher ratio get a bigger prop or run more cells. For glider use this motor really wakes up at the 60+ amp range.

Hey now,
You think? I got it used and was told that was the GB, but I could be wrong. I checked it with an astro watt meter, graumpner 14-9.5 with a 25 degree hub (I was told this was like running a square prop) I wonder if the hub is reversed? which side is front?
on ten 2400cp cells, 48.6 amps consistant.
According to the Aveox web site that's about right. Hmmm
They also say that's a lot of amps for this motor...
You guys are really running them at 60-70 amps?!? uff da! that's some power.
I'm really new at this big plane high power thing.
untill I got this my idea of high power was a CSD twister with a Kontronic fun 400-23 on 8 he cells...
