Did you already start with the wingribs?

I do design and built gliders for many years and also with the Eppler airfoils, only, this was more than 35 years ago, these are hopelessly outdated!!!

Are you forced to use these? If not, can't you make a better choise?
I also see people still use Eppler 205 on their Sagitta for exampe, but there are nuch better choices now IMO, depending of location.

Are there other members that also think this way?

No I have not started ribs jet. What do you suggest for replacement? I choose these profiles because of the flat bottom, then I do not need the special table etc.
Also I doīnt know so much about different profiles and differences between them and mainly choose eppler because I found a build log (Jim Brandon) which is not available in the net anymore. He did use these profiles and then I thought Iīll go with same.

progress

Hi

One wing spar completed, I did whole spar at the time, so the tip part is also assembled. Donīnt know if itīs better or not.
Now I started to prepare to roll my GE boom. Waxed, vaselined and taped the mandrel and cut the glass on template. I also will put CF tows on 4 sides, makes it stiffer. Letīs see what the first one turns out, maybe Iīll try to roll all carbon boom also.

Is the designer the same as the Eclipse 180"? Also has V tail....Just started thread on thermal sailplanes. Found pdf plans on old timer plans thread.

Lee Renaud of Airtronics fame designed the Esprit (84") the Grand Esprit (132") and Super Esprit (173"). I know the Grand and the Super are great flying sailplanes, I fly them.
Hal Cover is the Eclipse designer.

Wingspan

I've got a Grand Esprit I'll get to building someday. The wingspan looks a bit proportionally over wide wingspan. Anyone have any feedback if it was built with a slightly shorter wingspan?

I can't offer anything about a shorter wingspan on the Grand Esprit, picture #2 below.
I can tell you about it's big sister the Super Esprit, pictures 3 and 4 below.
The span is 173" and the tail boom is 4 inches longer other than that it is a Grand Esprit. The inboard panels on the Super are about 48" and the out board are about 40". The root and tip chords arer the same on both.
The Super flies MUCH better than the Grand proving that bigger is better.

Yeah, I got a kit a while ago but then found a carbon and fiberglass fuse! I'm not sure if I should be true to the design and build the wood fuse or the composite one. I just had an idea to maybe buy a Houston hawk wing kit and use it without the wing tips for an vintage and an updated version.

My GE build got interrupted do to working 13 to 14 hours a day, and taking care of my home on the weekends.
Hard to stay with it, so I come here to get inspiration.
I also have an older Legionaire 140 I am putting back into flight worthy shape.
It belonged to a friend of mine , Bob Steele ,who was once President of LSF.
Bob is now deceased, but I bought the Legionaire off another club member
who got it from Bob, but lost interest in it.

Did second boom and I think this one I could use. It is one layer UD carbon between 3 layers of 200g/mē 45/45 glass. One layer is inside the carbon and two layers are outside. In the first third of the larger end there is 4th layer of glass. It weights 78 grams and is very rigid. If I am right the original kit boom weigthed about 110 grams but its all glass. So I think mine is at least as stiff as original. I might try to do one boom with leaving one layer of glass out, this one seems to be a little overkill with so many glass. I doīnt know, I have not seen the original boom in real.
Saved tail weight is the most precious though.

Yesterday I took third boom off the mandrel. This time I left one layer of glass out. So its one layer UD carbon between two layers of 200gr glass, on first third there is again the additional glass layer. Now itīs 66 grams and stiffness seems to be almost the same as last boom with three layers of glass and weight 78gr. I think this one is going to be the one I use. Almost half the weight of the original boom, nice.
