Reducing the voltage of a 3 cell Li-poly pack?
Has anyone tried to reduce the voltage of a 3 cell pack to be 9.6 volts instead of the 12.6 that a 3 cell 4.2 volt per cell would give. The reason I ask is that in some cases a two cell would not give me the performace I want as compared to 8 cell Kan pack. But a 3 cell pack would cause me to either have to prop down or gear the motor differently. So I was wondering if it was possible to restrict the voltage to keep the same prop and/or gearing but get the duration and weight benefits of li-polys.

The only practically way to reduce the voltage is to use the speed controller - don't give full speed!
....i know that this not was what you were thinking about - but some kind of step down power supply that can handle 10, maybe 20 A is heawy, hot, and not easy to make....

Yes. You can maybe use the throttle trim - set it to full throttle when you arm, then as soon as it is armed pull it back. That way you are unlikely to over voltage the motor accidentally.
