Peter Rake's 60" Pfalz E.1 - 3rd Prototype, yes another one...

Yes, another Pfalz E.1 from Peter Rake's plans. This one is hand cut, I sure wish I had just ordered a kit from Charlie...
The first prototype is being built by Dan Parson here:
1st Prototype
and the second by Tim which has flown:
2nd Prototype

Wings and elevators covered, gear soldered and electronics mounted. I hope to have the fuse covered in the next couple of days. Pictures to follow...

I can't wait to see the pics. Are you still using wing warping?

Tim,
I'm building this pretty as they are on the plans so no wing warping on this one. I did cut an extra set of ribs so I could try it. I still have to cut the insignia for the plane. White crosses for the undersides and black for the top.

Am I seeing things or is the whole undersides of the wings 100% black? Are you building something different?

The Holtzem E.I

Greg,
From the Pfalz E.I-E.IV Datafile 059, I'm build the E.I flown by Max Holtzem in 1916. He was a test pilot for Pfalz and flew this specially painted plane in aerobatic displays. The contrasting upper and lower surfaces make this plane different from all the other all white with black trimmed E.Is. The lower surface crosses were painted white...

The upper surfaces will be the standard "obituary" trim...

Gotta love a large Pfalz/Eindecker model. Coming along nicely.
I have a small 24" version, and test flew it without the rear fuse covering, in the same state that your plane is currently in. I thought I'd get some idea of how it flew, before finishing every detail. Flew as if extremely tail heavy and draggy. The covering sure makes a difference.

The gussets are a good idea. I've always been terrified of non-reinforced butt joints, and creating angled joints is a lot of work. I even cheated and added a diagonally positioned longeron in the rear fuse of my Eindecker, to stop the fuse from twisting. Actually it had a twist in it which needed to be removed, but it braced the fuse well, and it can't be seen after covering. It just looks lousy in the bare bones shots, so it's something to add afterward, that nobody but the builder knows about.

Fuse is covered and beginning some of the details.

Anyone have a picture of the Pfalz emblem for the cowl?

Yes he does, it is just too bad he lives across the pond. BTW, I am trying my hand at wing warping on mine.

1905Flyer3 please accept my apologies for not yet posting that Pfalz logo. I cannot seem to locate my book which has this information. I will keep looking and keep you posted.
Again I am sorry.
