Question
Looking for first RC Boat - any suggestions ?

Hi,

Real newbie question, but here goes, be gentle

I am looking for suggestions for a relatively cheap RC Boat -
(Holiday usage, I live nowhere near water in the middle of the UK, so it will only see use a couple of times a year :P)

I want to use it on the coast - South Coast, UK, beach launch, so it needs to handle calmish (hopefully) conditions...also the kids may want a go if the water is empty of swimmers and safe etc, so I am not looking for a speed demon powerhorse

Any suggestions ? UK - Based.

I am not sure if I can use my existing TX or not - I currently have a DX7 that I use with my helis and aircraft, but I seem to recall marine band is different ?

Thanks for any suggestions.

Oh, I have been down toyrus...those things there look quite breakable...Anyone with experience of those ?

Cheers

Andy

Forget ready made junk, build a Springer ( check Springer thread). Build one for the kids, it `ll grow-up with them. It is illegal to use aircraft frequency R/C equipment for surface use. Cheap, reliable 2 ch equipment is available even on 2.4 gHz. Try Giant Cod company for example but all the major companies have reliable budget sets for boat use.

The DX7 is ok for surface, it's already 2.4GHz.

Keep junior a safe distance away from the water.

I am thinking you want it Ready To Run? If you are into tugs you may want to check the Aquacraft Atlantic Harbor Tugboat or the Southampton. Maybe the Bristol Bay is something for you if you like a RTR fishing boat? All these are reliable boats.

Hi Andy,

Using a model in salt water requires maintenance, a lot of it, as salt water is very corrosive.

A watertight radiobox for the electronics and a good seal of the deck, to keep the water out.

All this is very well possible with a Springer build, as you can build it with the Sea in mind.

So, stainless steel shaft and fittings, a well lubed propulsion system and rudder.

Keep us posted.

Regards, Jan.

Any shore wave, however calm the day, is a monster for a model. Look for resorts with sailable lakes. This link might help - http://www.modelboatlakes.co.nr/

Thanks for the replies everyone

Good point about the kids dropping my DX 7 in the water, that would be bad, especially with no data backup on the DX7.

But it is not useable in any case on the surface ? Even if it is 2.4 GHz ?

Cheers

You said you live in the middle of the UK so this puts you near the center of the model boating universe. Go to http://wimodelboats.org/boat_clubs.htm and scroll down to the Great Britain section and find the closest club to you. Attend one of their meetings and I'm sure you will get more first hand advise on what is available in your area for your price range than you will ever be able to remember. You might possibly find a model somebody is willing to sell you, and a place to run it near your home. Be careful though. The club might be a bit like Charybdis and suck you in. Next thing you know your planes and helis will all have floats.
