Do you want to see how durable this plane is?

We were maiden flying a new 72" Hercules which has the 6" middle extension what we thought at first was a radio failure and it hit the ground hard enough to bounce 8 feet high. We were flying in 90 degree air temperature with about an 8 mile per hour wind out of the South. The plane flew well with C3530 KV 1700 motors even in the heat. The video shows gliding and multiple hand launches after the crash.

We later decided that the hot glue had softened because it was so hot that day and the horns had loosened in the elevons and the servos probably moved because they also were glued in with hot glue.

The plane was carrying four 4500 3S lipos weighing in over 3.5 lbs for a total of 18,000 mA of 3S power (yes eighteen thousand!!!!). The plane had a total weight of over 8+ lbs when it hit the ground. I do not know of any other plane of this size and weight that could have survived this kind of an accident with so little damage. All of the batteries and radio were undamaged even though the plane hit the ground so hard. This is the advantage of the EPP foam and a flying wing design.

The plane was heavy enough it sank so deep in the grass we had to hand launch it. We did not edit out any bad launches. I am pleased that this plane is stable at such a slow speed that it can be easily hand launched even at the amazing weight of 8 lbs. I also have a bad elbow that makes my being able to launch the plane even more impressive.

I was using some new speed controls and they didn't throttle up the same although they are the same brand and size. This gave us a good chance to test how the plane will fly with unequal thrust. The plane does not pull to the side or loose control even with one motor at half the thrust of the other due to the dual rudder design. I did not put music with this video because I want you to listen to the motors and hear how much different they are running.

Hercules 72 inch crash and unequal thrust 7-21-11 (5 min 20 sec)

This is for all of you who have forgotten how fragile most planes are.

Today I went flying with the Hercules with the 6" extension and I set it up and flew it 4 different ways to test the CG. See the pictures below.

Total plane weight is 5.3 lbs without batteries or 84 oz.
Elevons are trimmed up about 1/4" for reflex

4X 4500 3S batteries ............ total battery weight 49 oz, RTF weight 133 oz, CG at 9.5
2X 4500 3S batteries ............ total battery weight 25 oz, RTF weight 109 oz
4x 1300 3S batteries ............ total battery weight 16 oz, RTF weight 100 oz
2x 1300 3S batteries ............ total battery weight 8 oz, RTF weight is 92 oz CG at 10.5

All flew well without modification with only slight amount of up trim adjustment as weight increased. The decreased weight did increase glide. The 2X 1300 3S batteries showed instability and didn't track or loop as well. The best flying was about 10" back.

How many planes do you know that can fly with 41 oz variation in batteries on board with out other modification and still fly well?

The first video shows me flying limbo at a local fly in and the second video shows be trying to stall the plane with the plane flying slow in steep climb outs and hard turns.

#2 Hercules Limbo 9-11 (2 min 21 sec)

2 elevons or 4 elevons....which is best????
GoPro with picture in a picture.

Reflex is a little up trimmed into the plane across the entire elevon. All flying wings have it and whether it is trimmed into the elevons or cut into the airfoil it is there.

Because the elevons on the Herc are so big it only needs a small amount of reflex. I think that most of the problems people have had are not enough reflex or too much movement in the elevons or reversed flying surfaces.

It took some pictures of the reflex trim on my 78' Herc from both the top and the bottom. Although the top is reflexed only about 1/8" we started to question if people are measuring from the bottom where the reflex is 1/4" to 3/8". If this is the case of the point of measurement it may confusing to some of the builders. Look at the pictures below.

All 3 of my Hercules at 66", 72" and 78 are flying great and balanced within 1/4" of 10" back from the nose of the plane. Notice the picture on the skid where I mark the 9.5" - 10" - 10.5" back from the nose to quickly check the CG.

I have only had one flight where the first Hercules prototype was tail heavy where my plane didn't fly well on the first flight. It didn't dive but looped back over my head. In fact on the last video of the 78" Hercules surfing in the wind, the plane had never been taken off or trimmed before the camera was running and the entire video was shot on the first set of batteries ever run though the plane.

I said I would not buy another one of Lees planes this summer, looks like I was wrong again

Good luck on the motors, I don't see any in stock at the moment. I will have to dig into my stash and see what else may work. (my motor stash of course!)
