Hang in there dil, the up time totaly makes up for the down time.

Gib, really do your research on servos. The 450 pro is very picky when it comes to size of the servos and the distance of the mounting holes. Also, if your going FBL make sure there is no problem with the centering of your servos. Im sure you've read the problems i've been going through. The hitec 5055 fit perfect, i know they can handel fbl, and are the most affordable servo with a high performance range.

Im still waiting for this weather to blow over. I cant wait to get something in the air.

kdean,

thanks for the tip. I'm going to try them on a friends v450d01 before I make a final decision. I am most worried with how the servos will work with the 2702 rx. The Savox are a little less $ and I like the aluminum housing, but the 5065's are programmable. I'm going to have to decide soon. I'm definitely set on the 5084 for the tail.
My fbl head should be there when I get home

TREX 450 Sport with Walkera Radio

I just finished building my first full kit. I got the TREX 450 Sport Super Combo. I used the 2801 pro transmitter and receiver. This evening I flew it's maiden flight. All went great. I made several lift off, hover, and landings to make fine adjustments. I only had one battery charged so I didn't have a lot of power left after all of the adjustments, but I was really happy with the stability. The brushless motor had very little heat in it. Unlike my brushed motors in the V400.

Do you plan on going fbl?

Ive got a 450 pro that im going to keep flybar. This is only because i bought a mks ds95i tail servo, not knowing that it does not work with the 2702v rx. So, i found to get my $100 servo to work, i needed a $170 gyro (quark). I also got a 2801 rx, and im ready to start installing, but i need some cyclic servos.

I know I've had a bad experience with the Blue Arrow cyclic servos, but the tail servo is really performing nicely. Only $19, not mg but 450 tail servos dont really need metal gears. The push rod will bend before any damage could come to servo mechanics. It been through some good hits that seem to be destroying everything else, but its still alive and kickin. You can find them at clubheli.com

glad to hear you got your bird up and flying Lyman! I finally got one of mine flying good, the smallest bird, but that's a start The cb100 that my friend put back together, he had the links between the flybar and the blade holders a little messed up, so i fixed them and flew through a few batteries before i gave it back to him to learn on. It was nice to get my thumbs back on the controller

my V400 is getting close to being back to flyable, but the only way to get the massive wobble out is to turn the gyros almost all the way down, which makes it difficult to fly without the gyros. I took some pics and vids and plan to post on the v400 thread some more details there. While it's still not perfect, I was able to narrow it down to something affecting the gyros (thanks for that tip on the rx gyro pots kdean). I have a few theories on how to get it back to normal, so we'll see. Plus posting the vids of the issue on the thread, i might get some good ideas from people (as usual ), but i'm a little sleepy, so I might have to wait on posting all the details until tomorrow.

my goal is to slowly but surely get all my helis flying without glitches, and without crashing the working ones.... yeah, that ain't never happening how 'bout at least keep one working at a time

I have thought about going FBL, but right now I'm just going to enjoy having one of each for comparisons. I have actually thought of going with 4 main blades and a full fuselage. Haven't found one I really like yet. I love the 2801tx. I haven't completly set it up for my V400 yet...still trying to get the settings as close to my 2603 settings as possible before flying. Building a helicopter and setting up the transmitter teaches you a lot about the entire heli!

500 update

Well, I just put my order in for the TracX FBL head, some spare blades, a couple blue lipo 3000mah 20c batteries, and a few other small parts like landing skids, and battery straps. I still did not get the spares I need for my crash kit, tt and tt gears, tail booms, main shafts, and cf tail rotor blades. I do still have the stock belt tail assem, so I might be able to get away with one major, hit to the boom, crash. If I lose the tt gears or bend the boom, I can swap over to belt assem until I get the replacements.

So far, the cost of this project is:

HK500 Kit plus servos, esc, motor = $260
Align TT tail assem, plus metal grips = $110
Upgrade tail servo = $40
Walkera FBL rx = $130
TracX FBL head = $120

Total = $660 (with extra/back-up belt drive tail assem, rudder servo, and FB head)

An Align T-rex ESP 3G combo sells for around $900

So, I've saved $240. I can put that towards batteries and the spare parts I'll need after I start crashing all over the place.

GOOD DEAL!!!!!!!!!

I'm glad to hear it's coming together. How long till you get your parts? I look forward to hearing about the fbl maiden. What motor did you go with on your 500?
I am waiting on a few more parts for my tarot 450. Looks like I'm going to mount my esc on the side of the frame. It's just too tight a fit under the battery tray.
I also found out I will need an adapter for my tail servo. I was planning on getting the servos mounted & centered over the weekend but one of my orders was shipped ups with no delivery on Saturday. Should be here today.
It will be the end of the week or beginning of next before I get the tail servo adapter. I ended up going savox for the cyclics & hitec 5084 for the tail. Tarot FBL head which I greased & loctited (seems smooth).

Any thoughts on why my heli in the picture won't fly?

I'm also interested in how your flybarless setup goes, kdean. I have an Alzrc fbl head waiting to be installed on the 450. I need to get new main bearings for the 450 though and can't seem to find them. I had ordered some bearings from wowhobbies and they were tiny, oops.... I'm searching around though, there has got to be some bearings on them there internets somewhere.

dgibbons, I also mounted the esc on the side. I just used a few zip ties and that seemed to do the trick. I've been shopping around some for some new servos too, since it's getting a make-over after the last crash. It has an align tail servo and I was thinking maybe some hitec for the cyclic, not sure yet though.

Since the exi flybar head never really gripped the main shaft very good, I probably will need to just install my fbl head when i put it back together. I'm not sure if it is the greatest idea to be changing this right after a crash, especially a crash in which I think something went wrong in the first place (was too close to the ground when it happened to be able to tell exactly what it was). I think i'm just going to have to suck it up and switch to fbl though when I rebuild. The 450 was being ignored for a bit while I was working on the v400. I'm waiting on a piece for that though, so the 450 is back to getting some attention. The tail slider piece is the only other thing i'm not sure about, it seems pretty loose, but then again it's connected to a ball link, so I think there is suppose to be some play in it. I may try to get a video of it and post it on here for opinions, because I was having a bit of a tail wag problem before I crashed and I'm not sure if this contributed to it.

I did'nt get the maiden flight in on sunday. I did not want to set up all my curves and travel just to have to change it all when the TracX head gets here. It should be here by next Wednesday, but I may have to wait two weeks cause I also orderd some stuff fron HK parts and E-flight. Its cheaper if i pick up everything at once.

I got the Turnigy 500H Typhoon (1800kv), very powerfull for a 500. You really only need about 1400kv so I may need to find a 11t pinion to calm things down.

Hey Dill,

As far as the fbl set up goes, its just like the V400. I did have to adjust the length of the links from the servo to the swash. Once you find the safe travel range of the swash loc arms, makeing sure they dont bind when it gets to high or fold in when it gets to low. Once you figure that out set your swash in the center of your safe range, setting your rods from the servo. Then, with the swash centered, get the blades at 0 pitch using the upper links from the swash to the blade grips. Once you've got that mechanical setup straight, you can start setting your high and low pitches, servo travel, pitch curves, and tracking.

Make sure your gyro is moveing in the right directions. I made that mistake once, to excited to try my new head forget to check the gyro reverse switches, ended up fliping on to the blades. As far as rx pot settings, put everything at 50% and adjust as you need.

Thanks for the info kdean! I'm getting ready to place a big order, with align cyclic servos for the 450 (that will give me all align servos on that heli, so hopefully that means I can rule them out as trouble makers), and a bunch of other parts for both the 120 and 400. It probably won't be here until next week at the earliest, and I'll be in china by then, so looks like i'll have some good heli repairing to do when i get back I probably won't get a chance to visit the walkera factory while i'm there (i'll be working too much) but I will look around and see if I can get my hands on another v400. I want another big heli and I'd like to get one the same as what I already have, so they can share spares. That leaves me with the 400 or 450, so I'll see if I can find a good deal over there

Sounds like your 500 is getting close. Looking at pictures, that thing is a beast compared to the 400 and 450! I'd like to see it in action, so once you do get it up and flying, be sure to post some vids

Servos

If your in the market for servos, I can help with what servos you should not get for a fbl 450. These are the two servos i have and tried and have caused a crash or three.

Walkera wk 09 09 - burn out quickly, i've had one burn out 40 feet up. Did not end well. One burnt on the bench during set-up. Dont trust walkera servos.

Blue Arrow D10012mg - these cant handel fbl at all. They cannot center, and end up bouncing around center. I first noticed this while installing them. I would turn a blade to the side in the grip and tap it with my finger, it would start bouncing and not stop. Tried it in the air, i know, stupid me, the heli started bouncing until the blades flew off. Then it bounced one more time after hitting the ground. I was going to try them with a flybar but one burnt on the bench during setup.

For now on, I will never skimp on servos. Hitec servos seem to be the best for durability and performance for the price. Im sure there are other mid to high priced servos out there, but I cant aford to 'try' stuff anymore. The Hitec 5055s have performed great on my V400 and now i have them in one of my 450pros. They are not the $40 5065s, but for half the price I think they are well worth it.
