Thinking about pulling the trigger on one of these birds, what's the "budget setup" on one of these look like? Thanks in advance.

The 3DHS recommended setup is used by the majority here, it's proven and if you need some help you'll get lots of support.

Read post # 9241; that is my "budget" setup. I have over 100 flights on it without any issues. Some guys have experienced an issue with one of the Solar servos, I have not.

I did replace the Rocket 3015-820kv with the Omega 130. The 3015-820 is okay but I think you will find it a little lethargic, probably similar to the Omega 103 would be on this plane. The Omega 130 has been great but I don't know if it is any better than the two listed below.

If I was going to purchase an Exceed motor again, or if my Omega 130 dies I'll get the Rocket 3020-950kv or the 3020-990kv motor. Hobby Partz was out of those when I put my Edge together.

Exactly the replies I'd want to hear when I ask about a "budget" setup

MeSE-Rious#6 there is plenty of talk in this thread about alternative motors and esc's. The one thing everyone agrees on is to go with good servos. Hitec HS-65mg's are pretty much the minimum.

I am running a hobbypartz motor in mine that I got on sale for $20 and an exceed 60A esc. I think the esc was like $30. The rocket motors from hobbypartz work pretty well. Just pick one about the same weight with a kv between 900-1000. You can run it on a 13x6.5 or 14x7 prop. The motor I am using weighs 170g and I have found no ill effects from running a slightly heavier motor.

epbuddy has a motor that works pretty well. I have also used a motor from headsuprc.com and liked it a lot for hundreds of flights. The Omega is a great motor but if you don't want to spend the extra cash there are plenty of budget friendly alternatives.

I'm using the Omega 130, a Sky Power 60 A esc (headsuprc), Hitec HS 65s (def a minimum, had nasty flutter w Emax mg). Batts are EZ flight lipo 2200 40C (1800 or 1600 for 4-4:30 of gravity defying fun!) and paralleled 1300/1500 40c (headsuprc) w/ an APC 14x7. Great setup, plenty of punch. I notice now that headsup has the 2200 in 50C on sale in stock! for $19.95. May grab one! I have run these batts hard and low (3.3!) And they come back every time. Minimal expansion if any even after a hard run. Getting avg of 5:30 plus flying a couple IMAC routines and 3D. I've heard good things about the GensAce- trick is finding them in stock!
Sky lipos are ok but they are the only batts I have that get "chubby" during hard flights. I wouldn't call them puffed but they do bloat. Often come back 80-90% to like new when cooled. Need some fridge time occasionally. Others I've had good luck with are Eco power (AMainhobby hobby) and G Force (Value hobby). Those were in 4S 2200 for other planes but they have 3 S also. Good luck. You are going to love the 3 D capabilities of this airframe. The float, roll and pitch control is awesome for 3D. Locks into an elevator almost instantly and with any wind will be a helicopter (land on a dime with 9 cents change). Harrier is great as are KE, KE spins, blenders pop tops, etc. could have saved typing and just said "enjoy, it does it all +". Will handle winds up to 20 with some work. Watched a friend at the field maiden his 41" the other day and there was nothing but teeth and "oh yah's". Very happy customer.
You will read about some negative comments on the wire gear- MOH (my opinion here)- By design they are soft and I'm sure they save more airframes then they make "bad" landings. On short grass or pavement or dirt they are fine. If they bend, bend them back and go have more fun. It isn't designed to do touch and goes it wants to be in the air blasting open the flight envelope which it does. Harrier land it at your feet throw in another lipo and Huck that thing! Fly low!
Ps. Only mod I made was adding forward anti twist posts with some CF rod (waiting on an EF 60" Extra and niticed they do that on all their airframes, good idea). Just paranoid I suppose. If you are beating on it double check wing nuts each flt!
